1723 Rosa Americana Twopence MS 60 Porous. Breen-96. 12.95 grams. Formerly offered as lot 5012 in our August, 1999 ANA Sale where it was described as, "The most common variety of this issue but still a challenging piece to locate in Mint State. Sand-yellow and chocolate-brown patina are intermingled over both sides of this boldly defined coin. The porosity is neither widespread nor distracting, although we do note a few small rim nicks on both sides. A suitable Mint State example of this 18th century issue that William Wood struck directly for use in the Thirteen Colonies." Listed on page 22 of the 2000 Guide Book. (PCGS# 128)

1793 1/2 C VF 25 Corroded. B-4, C-4, R.3. Scattered corrosion throughout and noticeable planchet flaws along the right obverse periphery limit the eye appeal of this first-year half cent. The predominantly chocolate-brown surfaces are possessed of suitable remaining definition. The reverse periphery does, however, exhibit isolated incompleteness of detail that is most prevalent on AMERICA. With an original mintage of only 35,334 pieces and unparalleled importance as a one-year type coin, the present piece should still elicit strong bids despite its impairment. (PCGS# 1000)

Since the small edge letter variety of this die marriage is elusive in all grades, we assume that this certified example displays large lettering around the edge. Moderately worn throughout, select areas of the details have been lost to circulation. Nevertheless, the chocolate-brown surfaces are essentially problem-free despite an abrasion behind and a dark spot before Liberty's portrait. A sizable planchet flaw (as produced) about the upper reverse rim is also worthy of mention. (PCGS# 1003)

1794 1/2 C Fine 12 PCGS. B-4b, C-6, R.6. Even though the holder masks the edge, we are fairly certain that this coin displays small edge letters. If it were to possess large edge letters, this piece would be an example of the B-4a die variety. In his Encyclopedia of United States Half Cents, Walter Breen asserts that the latter variety is unique. The chocolate-brown patination that envelops the fields lightens to a sandy-tan hue over the highpoints. Although the balance of the features are suitably detailed for the grade, the lower right obverse periphery is noticeably weak and possessed of scant definition. Free of mentionable circulation impairments, this is an important representative of this low mintage delivery. (PCGS# 1003)
