1877 1C MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. The 1877 is an issue whose low mintage (852,500 pieces) correlates to its low availability. It is scarce in all grades and especially elusive in Mint State. There are simply never enough 1877 cents to go around for the large numbers of Indian cent collectors. This piece has subdued reddish-orange luster, intermingled with steel-blue, gold, and mint-green. A bit weakly struck on the feather tips, as usually seen, and struck from the Weak N reverse--the final use of that workhorse hub. Virtually unmarked, a wispy die crack is seen between the date and the rim. A modest amount of scattered carbon over both sides prevents a higher grade assessment.

1877 1C MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. An attractive example of this famous issue, decently struck with vibrant, shimmering luster and a coating of speckled patina each side. Both obverse and reverse are virtually pristine. The 1877 Indian cent had a business strike mintage of 852,500 pieces, making it an instant rarity and the key date to the series, although the 1909-S actually had a lower mintage of 309,000 coins. Presumably, more of the '09-S cents were saved as examples of the final issue of the popular Indian cent series.

1877 1C MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. The bright, shimmering surfaces of this key date near-Gem are truly a delight to behold. The pleasing lime-green and red-orange toning occurs in a variegated fashion on both sides, with lime-green dominating on the obverse and red-orange on the reverse. The generally crisp striking details are only partially incomplete on a couple of the upper headdress feather tips, and diagnostically so on the N in ONE. Wispy contact marks are noted on Liberty's cheekbone and in the lower left obverse field. A lovely high-end example that should please even the most demanding Indian cent specialist.

1909-S VDB 1C MS65 Red PCGS. As expected, the diagnostics of genuine examples can be easily detected on this example. A small ridge, or groove, runs along the curve of the top loop in the mintmark near the serif, and there is a tiny but noticeable lump on the top side of the middle curve of the mintmark. On the reverse, the middle stroke of the B in the designer's initials is slanted, and the three initials are closer to the left (facing) stem than to the right. This low mintage first-year issue was recognized early on and set aside in large numbers by collectors as well as the general public. Full red Gems are elusive and always in demand by date and mintmark collectors of this popular series. This piece has flaming orange-red surfaces and is sharply struck throughout. An outstanding example of this key issue. Certified in a green-label holder. (PCGS# 2428)

1914-D 1C MS63 Red PCGS. A lot of coin for the grade, with just a light blush of purplish-brown only on the highpoints of this otherwise tan-gold example. A small tick is noted in the right obverse field. An appealing and extremely collectible example of this rare key date. Note the unique triangular shape of the inside of the D mintmark, a diagnostic for genuine pieces, along with the absence of the designer's initials from the shoulder.

1914-D 1C MS64 Red PCGS. A brick-red near-Gem that has unencumbered satiny luster and scant indication of carbon. Sharply struck and well preserved, since a hairline-thin mark on Lincoln's upper lip provides the only detectable contact. Although the 1914-D has only the third-lowest mintage of the series, after the 1909-S VDB and the 1931-S, it is much tougher in better Mint State Red grades than the other two famous key dates.

1922 1C No D Strong Reverse MS60 Brown PCGS. Die Pair 2. The consensus among our cataloging staff confirms the quality of this important Lincoln cent. Both sides have light olive-brown surfaces with hints of blue and lilac toning. Lighter tan has faded from original mint red. This example features the strong reverse and is known as "Die Pair 2," the only variety that is recognized by PCGS to be a real 1922 No D Cent.

This variety is the result of die refinishing after a clashing accident, much like the 1937-D 3-Legged Buffalo. David Lange described the process in The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents: "The no-D variety of Die Pair 2 resulted when normal dies clashed, leaving both dies with shallow and inverted impressions of one another. The obverse die was then abrasively polished to remove these clash marks, leaving it without a mintmark and with several low-relief elements (including the date) noticeably weakened. The reverse die, however, was removed altogether and replaced with a fresh one."

1955/55 1C Doubled Die Obverse MS64 Red PCGS. FS-021.8. The 1955 Doubled Die Obverse is truly one of the great mint errors of the 20th Century. The original, fiery mint-red luster remains over each side, but the overall presentation of the coin is tempered by numerous small specks of carbon on each side. The staggering price increase that this error cent variety undergoes as one crosses into the Gem grade level should give added desirability to the present Choice Uncirculated specimen. At the threshold of the next grade, both sides present an undisturbed appearance to the naked eye. The strike is bold and allows for full appreciation of the doubled obverse features. A lovely coin that could form the centerpiece of any Lincoln cent collection. PCGS has certified just 18 examples finer (6/06).

1955/55 1C Doubled Die MS64 Red PCGS. A brick-red near-Gem of this popular and spectacular doubled die obverse variety. Sharply struck and devoid of carbon flecks or the spotting that often accompanies this issue. Close inspection reveals a couple of minute ticks on the portrait, but these were probably present on the planchet prior to the strike. Full Red examples are much scarcer than their Brown or Red and Brown counterparts, and those who demand the finest pieces for their collection should strongly consider this impressive coin. 1955/55 1C Error Doubled Die MS64 Red PCGS. FS-021.8. Because of the method of distribution of most 1955 Doubled Die cents, most examples received slight handling by the non-collecting public. As a result, spots and brown surfaces are usually seen on these pieces, and full red color is very rarely encountered. Of course, that being said, multiple examples with full red color appear in this sale! The presence of these full red coins can be explained simply because in a 5,000 lot sale there just have to be duplications of certain coins. It in no way detracts from the rarity of such coins, it only gives the collector a wider variety to choose from. This piece has rich cherry-red color with a couple of small abrasions and a few small specks of carbon that keep it from a full Gem grade. PCGS has only graded 18 pieces finer (6/06).

1912-S 5C MS64 PCGS. Light heather and lilac toning graces each side of this stunning and delightful near-Gem coin, a pleasing example of this first nickel coinage from the San Francisco Mint, from the last year of the type. Although it seems common in U.S. numismatics that oftentimes a new design is introduced at branch mints that had not previously coined that denomination, what is less common is for new branch mints to coin the last years of a series. An interesting challenge might be to collect such pieces in high grade, for example the 1912-D and -S Liberty nickels, the 1908-S and 1909-S Indian cents, the 1891 O-mint dime and quarter issues, the 1921-D Morgan dollar, and the D-mint 1906 and 1907 eagles and double eagles. 1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS63 PCGS. Along with the 1918/7-D and the 1916/1916, the 1937-D is the third most popular variety in the Buffalo nickel series. As one might imagine from the late date of issue, it is by far the most available of the three varieties and is occasionally offered at public auction in the better grades of Mint State. This is an especially well struck example that has lovely, satin-like mint luster. Each side is covered with pale lilac toning with a touch of olive over the highpoints.

1916-D 10C MS64 Full Bands PCGS. Long the key to the Mercury series in all grades, the 1916-D has an impressively low mintage of only 264,000 pieces. A few more high-grade coins are known of this issue than other, later dates, simply because more were saved. However, near-Gems are still a scarce item and always of interest to advanced collectors. This piece has an exceptionally pleasing appearance. The nearly mark-free surfaces have an overlay of light silver-gray toning that deepens slightly in the fields. An original and highly attractive '16-D dime.

Another feature that most survivors of this issue have in common is a plethora of distracting, grade-limiting abrasions. Not so on the present coin. The fully frosted surfaces are devoid of even a single noteworthy blemish, and the sharp strike is all that one would expect for the issue. A creamy-white Premium Gem with razor-sharp definition over the major design elements and virtually no disturbance of the luxuriant mint frost.
