1905 1C MS66 Red PCGS. Rich cherry-red color characterizes this highly lustrous post-1900 type coin. Sharper struck than most 1905 cents. The only surface flaws of note are a couple of shallow planchet voids beneath the 1 and 9 of the date. While 32 coins sounds like a substantial number of MS66 Red coins, it is a tiny percentage of the mintage of 80 million pieces struck. (PCGS# 2222)

1909 VDB 1C MS67 Red PCGS. A beautiful type coin, essentially unimprovable, as both NGC and PCGS have each graded only a single specimen finer. A reddish-tan piece with glints of olive, and apparently free of carbon or other distraction. According to Dr. Sol Taylor's The Standard Guide to the Lincoln Cent, the designer's initials may be found in eight different varieties, from three periods to no periods (as the dies filled in with detritus), of which the rarest are those with one period. The present coin has traces of each period present. Watch these coins take off with the Lincoln bicentennial in 2009! (PCGS# 2425)

1909-S VDB 1C MS66 Red and Brown PCGS. The Lithuanian-born sculptor Victor David Brenner had a lasting fascination with Abraham Lincoln, and the Lincoln cent obverse was an adaptation of one of his many previous works. This lustrous and firmly impressed key-date cent retains substantial luminous gold color, though faint lilac hues are also evident, particularly on the reverse. No spots or marks are encountered, and the eye appeal is powerful. Population: 26 in 66 Red and Brown, 0 finer (4/07). (PCGS# 2427)

1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS64 PCGS. While seen fairly frequently in most circulated grades and the lower Mint State grades, the Three-Legged Buffalo is seldom encountered in near-Gem condition. MS64 is probably the ideal grade for a special collection of Buffalo nickels, as the price trebles one grade point up, even as the certified population diminishes by a factor of 3. Lovely sunset-gold patina appears in the recesses on each side, with the luster better than the typical diffused sort, and relevant marks are conspicuously absent. PCGS has certified only 49 pieces finer (4/07). (PCGS# 3982)

1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS65 PCGS. FS-020.2. Easily the most famous late die state for 20th century American coinage, the Three-Legged 1937-D variety resulted from heavy die polishing that effaced one of the bison's forelegs. The Buffalo nickel series seems unusually prone to such flaws, with the so-called "Three-and-a-Half Legs" variety for 1936-D and a number of obverses with a missing feather behind the Indian's head. Still, the prominent nature of the 1937-D variant and its early discovery and publicity assured its lasting notoriety. At least one advertiser was touting such pieces by 1938, and it remains one of the most popular Buffalo nickels to this day.

While both sides of each Three-Legged nickel display the effects of heavy stress from overuse, it is important to note that such overwork was not an isolated case. As David Lange (2006) notes, "The dies for this issue were used far too long, and they reveal light to very heavy erosion." He further notes that the Three-Legged variety was the most prominent example of overuse, and that the Denver Mint more frequently used dies past their prime than either Philadelphia or San Francisco.

This attractive Mint State example displays uncommonly strong luster and above-average detail on the obverse. Vivid orange-gold and rose patina graces both sides. Die rust and erosion are plain on the reverse, though not as strong as on some examples; this is most noticeable below the bison, where the line of pits is faint. The overall appearance is clean, and only minor grazes affect the surfaces. PCGS has certified only four examples finer (4/07). (PCGS# 3982)

1879-CC $1 MS64 PCGS. Perfect Mintmark. The 1879-CC had a low mintage of only 756,000 pieces, and then a couple of hundred thousand coins may have been melted under the Pittman Act of 1918. These two events created a coin that is seldom seen in mint condition outside major auctions. This is an especially attractive example that is brilliant throughout. The fields show a faint glimmer of semi-reflectivity, and the striking details are fully brought up in all areas. A milling mark on the cheek of Liberty and another across the eagle's breast prevent a full Gem classification of this lovely coin. (PCGS# 7086)

1893-CC $1 MS64 PCGS. The 1893-CC Morgan dollar is a collector's favorite because of its scarcity and its position as the last Carson City Mint coin of its denomination. The issue does not come without its problems, however. In his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, David Bowers says: "Of all Carson City Mint Morgan dollars, the 1893-CC is notorious for being very heavily bagmarked. The vast majority of Mint State coins are in lower levels and have extensive marking. High-grade mark-free coins are very rare."

Radiant luster exudes from the well preserved, essentially untoned surfaces of this near-Gem specimen. A few inoffensive luster grazes just barely preclude full Gem status, and a strong impression left relatively sharp detail in the hair over Liberty's ear and on the breast feathers. Light die cracks encircle the margins on both obverse and reverse. (PCGS# 7222)

1895-S $1 MS65 PCGS. This is a scarce San Francisco Mint issue which has seen relatively few survivors from a mintage of 400,000 pieces. It is exceedingly scarce at the Gem level of preservation, and, in his Encyclopedia, Bowers states: "MS-65 or finer specimens are truly rare, and I estimate that only about 50 to 100 remain."

The current offering is a flashy Gem that displays semi-prooflike fields and a slight degree of milky patina. The design elements are boldly struck, except for minor softness just above Liberty's ear and on the eagle's breast feathers. There are only a few small marks on each side of the coin. 1896-O $1 MS64 PCGS. Another Morgan dollar in this auction in memorable condition aesthetically, and near the top of the Condition Census numerically, the present piece has been exceeded by exactly a half-dozen Gem coins, namely three each at NGC and PCGS (4/07). The Bowers Morgan dollar Guide Book (2005) quotes silver dollar expert Wayne Miller concerning this issue, "No other Morgan dollar is as consistently deficient in luster, strike, and degree of surface abrasions as the 1896-O. In [Miller's] opinion the 1896-O is the rarest of all Morgan dollars (even more than 1901) in truly gem condition."

The present coin is not a Gem, but it is one grade point below, and appears considerably high-end for the MS64 ranking assigned to it. The surfaces are brilliant, with a slight patina of silver-gold in the largely untoned centers. A thin peripheral crescent of deep amber-gold, magenta, and russet is noted on the upper obverse, while the reverse is startlingly untoned, lustrous, and brightly radiant. The sharp strike has brought up most of the detail in the eagle's breast and the individual feathers in the wings, as well as on the often-weak leaves in the wreath below the eagle. On the obverse the hair above Liberty's ear shows only minor weakness. Close examination with a loupe reveals a couple of small milling marks on Liberty's cheek, along with a larger tick behind Liberty's cap, in the right obverse field, that cumulatively help to determine the grade. Elsewhere there are few mentionable abrasions, especially on the high-end reverse.

This coin represents an elusive opportunity to obtain such a significant and conditionally rare Morgan dollar for a fine set. Population: 23 in 64, 3 finer (4/07). (PCGS# 7242)
