1842-O $5 XF45 NGC. Variety 1. Doug Winter estimates that fewer than 100 1842-O half eagles survive from a mintage of 16,400 coins, and Mint State examples are rare. This Choice XF piece displays bright yellow-gold luster and relatively smooth surfaces. Some strike weakness occurs on the hair curls around Liberty's face, and the eagles neck and talons, but little wear is present. This is the second-rarest O-mint five dollar -- only the 1847-O is scarcer.

1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-4, R.5, XF40 PCGS. Ex: Twelve Oaks Collection. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a. The Philadelphia Mint struck gold coins for the first time in 1795 and half eagles were the first denomination struck. A modest mintage of 8,707 pieces was accomplished, but it is likely that more 1795-dated coins were struck the following year, as the Mint often continued using coinage dies as long as they were serviceable, regardless of calendar year. Twelve die varieties are known for the date and type, but three more die varieties were struck in later years, using leftover 1795-dated obverse dies combined with Large Eagle reverses. This coin represents the BD-4 variety, with star 11 joined to the Y in LIBERTY and three berries in the wreath. This impressive XF specimen exhibits some light wear on the design elements, but much interior detail remains intact. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded and the overall presentation is most attractive.

The 1798 Capped Bust Right half eagle, with the Large Eagle reverse, claims a respectable mintage of 24,867 pieces, with seven die varieties known for the date and type (a single variety is known with the old Small Eagle reverse). This coin represents the BD-3 variety, with the unique 14 star reverse. The BD-4 is an elusive variety, with a surviving population of 35-50 examples in all grades. This pleasing XF40 specimen displays some light wear on the design elements, with an extensive network of die cracks on the reverse. The lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces retain traces of original mint luster in sheltered areas.

There are nine 1799 die marriages, and they range from very scarce to very rare. BD-6 is promptly attributed by its partially lapped reverse stars. This is a peach-gold representative with hints of rose-red in protected areas of the reverse. The high points display moderate wear, but luster occupies design recesses, and no marks are of any notice.

1800 $5 BD-2, High R.3, XF45 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/c. The blunt 1 in the date and a triple dentil between M and E in AMERICA help identify the variety. The 1800 BD-2 variety was struck in quantity based on the number of survivors, with 175 to 250 pieces known in all grades. This Choice XF example was struck from recently lapped dies and shows the resultant reflective fields on both sides. A faint die crack exists between I and B of LIBERTY. Light orange-gold color retains considerable mint luster, while scattered small marks and abrasions are seen, but they are of little distraction on the well-defined surfaces.

1802/1 $5 Centered Overdate, BD-1, High R.4, AU55 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, no clashing, no lapping, no cracks. The 1802/1 Capped Bust Right half eagle claims a substantial mintage of 53,176 pieces, with eight die varieties known for the date. All the varieties were struck from leftover overdated obverse dies from the previous year. This coin represents the popular BD-1 variety, with the 2 positioned free of the bust, a star point aimed at the lower beak of the eagle, and a leaf pointing to the center of the I in AMERICA. John Dannreuther estimates the surviving population of the BD-1 at 75-100 examples in all grades today. This Choice AU specimen offers lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces, with significant amounts of original mint luster remaining in sheltered areas. Only light wear is evident on the design elements and the overall presentation is most attractive.

Traditionally, this variety has been listed as an overdate, but John Dannreuther and Harry Bass both believed the artifact under the final digit in the date was actually another 9, making its overdate status doubtful. The surviving population numbers approximately 250-325 examples in all grades. This impressive near-Mint specimen exhibits just a trace of friction on the design elements, with some loss of detail on the reverse, due to lapping. The lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces retain much original mint luster in sheltered areas. The high quality within the grade is confirmed by CAC.

1838-C $5 HM-1, High R.4, XF40 PCGS. A tiny, disconnected berry sits under the top leaf pair, a clue that this coin was struck from a relatively early die state. The berry disappears on later die stages due to die lapping. The position of the top leaf pair is key to identifying the HM-1 variety, since it sits distant from U in UNITED as compared to the HM-2 variety, where a leaf nearly touches U. Those two die pairs produced the entire 17,179 Charlotte half eagle mintage dated 1838. This Classic Head variety is seldom seen finer than the XF grade. This is a lightly abraded XF40 example, with green-gold color throughout both sides and a sharp strike for the grade and variety. Traces of luster remain.
