(1781)-Dated Libertas Americana in Bronze, MS60 NGC. Gold CAC. Betts-615. The Libertas Americana medal, commissioned by Benjamin Franklin circa 1781, is perhaps the most famous medal associated with the American War for Independence and the United States early allied relations with the French. The obverse of the medal features a beautiful, high-relief bust of the allegorical goddess of Liberty, a staff, and a Liberty cap, along with the inscriptions LIBERTAS AMERICA (American Liberty) and 4 JUIL. 1776 (July 4, 1776). The reverse portrays the infant Hercules (a personification of the young United States) strangling a serpent in each hand (representations of British General Burgoyne and Lord Cornwallis, who were defeated by Franco-American forces in the Saratoga campaign and siege of Yorktown, respectively, ultimately leading to the end of the war with Britain). The chief subject of the design is a depiction of Minerva (France) repelling a ferocious lion (Britain), protecting the infant. Surrounding the vignette is the inscription NON SINE DIIS ANIMOSUS INFANS (The infant is not bold without divine aid). Noted French medalist Augustin Dupré engraved the dies after artist Espirit-Antoine Gibelin sketched the concept for the design. The medals were struck at the Paris Mint. About 100 to 125 bronze specimens survive. This example displays medium reddish-brown patina with scattered light marks, but the overall eye appeal and technical quality far surpass expectations for the grade, as the CAC Gold label suggests. 1858 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-203, Pollock-247, R.5, PR63 PCGS. Gold CAC. The obverse shows a hooked-neck eagle flying left with tall wings. On the reverse the denomination is set within a wide oak wreath with an olive sprig and a group of three arrows are wrapped into the bottom of the wreath. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. This piece is modestly reflective and well struck, showing warm copper-orange hues across largely unmarked surfaces. Housed in a green label holder. (PCGS# 11869)
