Auction 311
| Lot 14361 » Ancient Coins » Roman
Ancients:
Pisidia, Sagallasos, Claudius II Gothicus,
268-270 AD, AE 35, (20.2 gm.), Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right/Apollo seated right holding lyre. SNG Cop 219. VF/AVF with even dark green patina.
A grand tradition of large Roman Provincial bronzes was coming to a quiet end with the striking of this coin. Within a very few years, the only Roman coins struck exclusively for native Greek speakers would be the miserably small potin tetradrachms of Diocletian and his co-rulers.
