1848 Second Restrike PR 64 Red and Brown. B-3, R.7. One of the scarcer proofs in this run from the Dr. Montgomery Collection. Subdued original red on both sides, with ample glow to tempt the fastidious collector. Repolished obverse die as seen on all of this pairing, with the familiar die file marks over RICA on the reverse. Heavy knife rim on both sides, and identifiable by a small void above ES of STATES on the edge. Free of significant spots or other distractions, and probably one of the very finest in existence for this variety.

1848 Restrike PR 63 Red and Brown PCGS. First Restrike. Distinguished by doubling on the right side of the T in CENT and ribbon. Somewhere between 12 and 18 examples are believed to still exist of this rare proof restrike. Slate-gray patina is seen over most of each side with small portions of flaming red surrounding the outer devices. Curiously, the central portions of each side are weakly struck, but there is absolutely no doubt about this coin's proof status.
Purchased by the consignor from Joe Flynn, 12/73, for $725. (PCGS# 1300)

1848 1/2 C Restrike PR63 Red and Brown PCGS. B-2, Low R.6. Fewer than two dozen proofs of this variety are believed extant in three different series (per Breen, 1983). The present example displays plenty of cherry-red luster, although it is slightly faded overall with a swirl of olive-gray color in the center of the obverse. Another whisper of toning is seen at the lower obverse border, but the number of grade-limiting carbon flecks and wispy handling marks is not excessive for the Select level of preservation. An important opportunity to acquire a truly rare Coronet Half Cent. (PCGS# 1300)
