*NGC 1849 Original PR 67 Red. Graded by NGC as PR 65 Red and a Restrike. B-1, not in C., High R.6, nearly R.7. Full fiery mint red with a partial wire rim. A small carbon spot is noted on the two denticles over the right side of star 9, and another tiny one on a denticle left of star 3. Under magnification a scratch can also be detected. 1849 1/2 C Restrike PR63 Red PCGS. B-2, Low R.6. This fully lustrous example displays a pinkish-red sheen that is original, if somewhat subdued. This is a fully defined example whose surfaces are kept from an even higher grade by a few scattered handling marks and carbon flecks. The overall eye appeal would, nonetheless, do justice to a Choice designation. The double impression on the T in CENT is the most readily evident diagnostic of B-2, a variety that Breen (1983) calls a "first restrike."

1849 1/2 C Restrike PR 63 Red PCGS. B-2, High R.6. A First Restrike, this coin displays a small date, large berries in the reverse wreath, and doubling on the T in CENT. Deep cherry-red color overlays both sides of this seemingly conservatively graded specimen. There are no singularly mentionable hairlines or contact marks, and the devices display the exactness of strike that one would expect of proof production methods. Glints of reflectivity are evident in the fields at certain angles. In his encyclopedia of United States half cents, Breen includes only 13 coins in his census for this issue. (PCGS# 1307)
