1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--Specimen MS65 Brown NGC. S-6, R.3. The S-6 is one of the most frequently encountered and certainly most easily recognized of all 1793 varieties. Its "Sprung Die" in the left obverse field is immediately apparent and seen on all examples of the variety to one degree or another. On this example it is especially pronounced with a sharp ridge in the field. This, of course, is because the coin was struck from a later state of the dies. In fact, almost all the Die State VI characteristics are present on this piece, indicating it was one of the final coins struck in the run of 12,000 S-6 cents and most likely minted on April 9, 1793. The Breen reference states this piece is a Die State II coin, but we respectfully disagree.

Three exceptional S-6 cents are known as well as a couple of memorable S-5 coins. According to the EAC Condition Census, this piece is tied for second finest known with the ANS coin, which is permanently impounded. The coin that is considered the finest known is the Ex: Bement example and is known as "The King of the 1793 Cents."

The condition of this coin is truly extraordinary. It was Breen's contention in his 1977 reference on proofs that this particular coin was struck on a burnished blank for presentation purposes. The surfaces do indeed display a brightness and vibrancy that is not seen on other Wreath cents we have encountered. Again, according to Breen, the Harold Bareford coin (this piece) is the one S-6 that most clearly qualifies as a presentation piece. The fields are bright and glow with semi-reflectivity. The design motifs also show an unparalleled degree of definition in all areas. Although there is no direct evidence of heavy metal flow in the fields, indirect evidence can be seen from the strongly bifurcated lettering around the peripheries, leading one to suspect that this coin may have been double struck. As for surface flaws, there are really none that are immediately apparent. Examination with a glass (PCGS# 1347)

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--MS64 Brown PCGS. S-10, R.4. The Sheldon-10 variety is sometimes called the Injured Rim variety due to the die flaw at 3 o'clock on the obverse. This variety has been known since at least the late 1860s, and was depicted on the famous "Levick Plate" published in the American Journal of Numismatics in 1869. The first Wreath cents were coined in early April 1793 with the final coins struck in July. Based on the emission sequence for these coins, it is likely that this variety was produced in the middle of April. Walter Breen believed that the production date for this variety was April 13, and that the total mintage was approximately 3,000 coins.

This example is from Breen's Die State I, with a narrow rim break over UNITE clearly visible. All of the obverse beading at the die flaw is clearly visible. The strike was very nicely centered on the planchet with a wide border outside the beads on each side. Most details are sharply defined although the upper locks of hair near Liberty's forehead are rather bluntly struck. The reverse has similar weakness on the ribbon bow and ribbon knot exactly opposing the weak obverse details. Both surfaces have smooth and satiny light brown luster with tinges of original mint red still visible on the reverse. There are very few 1793 large cents with even a trace of the original mint color. This specimen is solidly in the Condition Census and is either the second or third finest known. In Walter Breen's Large Cent Encyclopedia, Del Bland recorded this as the second finest known.

1793 Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--MS 66 Brown NGC. S-9, R.2. One of the more frequently encountered varieties, the S-9 is characterized by the curved sprig on the obverse, and on the reverse by the wide, rounded bow and four trefoils in a line with the word CENT. While one of the more "common" varieties of Wreath cents, there is nothing common about this coin. It is far and away the finest Wreath cent we have ever offered at public auction, regardless of variety. In fact, according to EAC standards it is tied with the Auction '83 example for finest known. The surfaces are bright and glossy; in fact, the fields have a hint of semi-reflectiveness giving the coin a medal-like appearance--which is further reinforced by the devices that are set off by themselves and unobstructed by abrasions or unnecessary legends. The striking details are extraordinarily sharp with needle-like definition on the hair curls of Liberty. The bright glossiness of the coin is overlaid by medium brown patina with just a hint of original underlying red. The only identifying feature we see that could be used for pedigree purposes is a tiny spot in the lower right obverse field out from the lower portion of Liberty's neck. 1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--MS64 Brown PCGS. S-9, B-12, R.2. This is easily the most plentiful of all 1793 Wreath Cents, and this is true in all grades. This is an early die state, and is a top-quality example for the variety. It is recorded as the tenth best in the Noyes Census, and tied with five others for fifth finest according to Del Bland. This is the Breen Large Cent Encyclopedia plate coin, and the reverse was illustrated in the 1879 monograph by Ed. Frossard. It also has a substantially continuous pedigree dating back over 130 years.

All of the Wreath Cents, a total of 63,353 coins, were produced in April and July 1793. Nearly all were coin in April, after which equipment failure prevented more production during May and June, as parts were repaired or replaced. The final 12,000 coins were produced in July.

The Wreath Cent is clearly the most recognized and the most popular of the 1793 coinage issues. Among the three large cent designs, it is also the most plentiful in Mint State grades. For the collector who simply wants a single example of our first copper coinage, this is an excellent candidate. Both sides have splendid olive-brown color with a few small splashes of steel and maroon patina. The surfaces have satiny luster throughout. Both sides have numerous tiny planchet defects or fissures.

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--MS65 Brown PCGS. S-8, R.3. On August 6, 1998, we auctioned an NGC-certified, MS66 Brown representative of this first-year Cent as lot 5852 in our Portland ANA Signature Sale. That coin, an example of the S-9 die marriage, realized $138,000. There is little negative that we can say about the present specimen. There are a few striking anomalies that are worthy of mention. First, the obverse reveals a few faint clashmarks from the reverse wreath in the field below Liberty's chin. Secondly, the diagnostic die break is seen on the reverse from the first T in STATES through the center of the coin. Finally, there are a few spindly die breaks on the obverse over Liberty's cheek, but these features are barely perceptible to the naked eye. The surfaces are glossy in texture with medium brown color that yields to aesthetically pleasing blue and lilac undertones as the coin rotates beneath a light. Both sides exhibit needle sharp striking definition with full beaded borders and devices that rise boldly above the smooth fields. This Gem is purportedly two points finer than the first coin on Noyes's Condition Census for this variety. We note, however, that Noyes's Condition Census is based on EAC grading standards, and it is impossible for us to determine where this particular coin ranks based on the assigned PCGS grade. We must, therefore, leave this determination to specialists. (PCGS# 1347)

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--MS62 Brown NGC. S-8, Low R.3. This obverse die outlasted four different reverse dies during Wreath cent production in 1793. One glance will quickly identify this obverse die, with its horizontal stem above the date. The reverse of this variety has a distinctive triangular-shaped bow.

This example has lovely golden-brown and olive color with lighter tan, faded from original red. Aside from microscopic surface roughness, the overall appearance is highly attractive. The reverse has a diagonal bisecting crack, as almost always for this variety. Light clash marks are evident in the fields. A few small nicks will serve as pedigree reference marks, including a shallow dent or scrape between the tops of EN in CENT. EAC 60.

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--S-8, B-13, Low R.3. MS62 Brown NGC. XF45 EAC. Die State II. The reverse is lightly cracked along the diagonal ridge of the initial die state. Minor clash marks are present on the obverse. According to the emission sequence worked out by Walter Breen, this was one of the last of the Vine and Bars Wreath Cents to be struck, just before S-11a. After these two varieties, the Lettered Edge pieces finished the series. The surfaces have attractive chocolate-brown color and are generally smooth and glossy. Only the slightest raised verdigris needs to be mentioned. A splendid Wreath Cent, marred only by a few tiny rim bruises on the reverse, but these should prove useful for pedigree researchers. Based on EAC grading, this example just misses the Condition Census for the variety, yet is probably within the top 20 for the marriage.
