1793 1C Wreath Cent--Lettered Edge--AU50 NGC. S-11c, R.3. Heavy clash marks are visible in the obverse fields, including much of AMERICA from the forehead down through the field to about chin level. Only a few Wreath cents were struck on lettered edge blanks. The majority of those known have Vine and Bars edge types. Among those of the Sheldon-11 die marriage, S-11a have the Vine and Bars edge type, S-11b have a lettered edge followed by two leaves, and S-11c have a lettered edge followed by a single leaf, such as ONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR [leaf]. Mostly smooth surfaces exhibit medium brown color, mixed with pale orange, having once been cleaned and retoned. The overall eye appeal is such, however, that NGC placed this in a primary holder from their service. EAC 15. (PCGS# 1350)

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Lettered Edge--XF45 NGC. S.11b or c, R.3. The grading service has identified this as a lettered edge Wreath cent, although did not specify which edge type. Sheldon-11b has two leaves incorporated into the edge device, while Sheldon-11c only has a single leaf. As these were given separate sub-variety designations by Dr. Sheldon, we feel that the grading services (and not just NGC) should all routinely make a note of the specific edge device. There are only two ways to make this determination, and one of these is simply to take the coin out of the holder. The other possibility is to plate match this example utilizing the edge marks at 2 o'clock to 3 o'clock on the obverse, as well as the minor lamination in the right obverse field. This is a pleasing medium brown Wreath cent, despite these few minor imperfections. The strike is strong but was not perfectly centered, thus the border beads at the disappear off the edge of the planchet; however, this is not quite far enough off-center to qualify as a mint error. 1793 Wreath Cent--Lettered Edge--AU 55 PCGS. S-11c, R.3. This is one of the finest Wreath cents we have ever had the privilege to handle. The surfaces are medium-brown in color over both sides. The striking details are well defined in general with slight softness noted on the highest portion of the hair curls on the obverse, and some weakness on the words ONE CENT in the center of the reverse. The most (perhaps only) distraction on the surface are numerous tiny flan cracks that are generally concentrated on the lower portion of the obverse, the accumulation of these makes that side resemble a dried creek bed. Die clashed on each side also but most notably in front of the neck of Liberty on the obverse. Most easily identified for pedigree purposes by a tiny carbon spot which is attached to the lower side a denticle just above the upright of the R in LIBERTY on the obverse. Significant portions of original mint luster remain. From the "Peerless" Collection of high grade type coins. An outstanding Choice AU Wreath cent and tied for sixth finest known with five others.

1793 Wreath Cent--Lettered Edge--XF 45. S-11b, R.5. This is the double leaf variety, evidenced by two leaves on the edge, end to end, following the word DOLLAR. This type is much rarer than the more commonly seen single leaf variety. This outstanding circulated specimen is well struck, although a hair off-center with even, light chocolate toning and only a few minor marks. The surfaces are glossy-smooth and both sides are free from any trace of carbon or corrosion. This piece sits near the top of the Condition Census for the double leaf variety. 1793 1C Wreath Cent--Lettered Edge--Cleaned--ANACS. AU Details, Net XF40. S-11c, Low R.3. A splendidly detailed example that has been recolored in the past, although the borders are nicely retoned in lavender hues while the centers possess faded orange-tan color. A few minor planchet flaws near the obverse center do not particularly distract. The sprig leans right on this die marriage, while the fraction denominator is entered too far to the right. Clash marks (as made) are noted below Liberty's chin, but the dies are otherwise perfect.

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Lettered Edge--VF20 NGC. Either S-11b, R.4, or S-11c, Low R.3; the encapsulation precludes examination of the lettered edge to determine the subvariety. A nicely defined example with clear legends and ample remaining definition on the trailing curls of Liberty's hair. The mahogany-brown surfaces are accompanied by wisps of darker and faintly granular patina. The reverse has unimportant marks on the rim at 3 and 9 o'clock, but otherwise refreshingly unabraded. Struck from a clashed obverse die. (PCGS# 1350)

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Lettered Edge--Fine 15 PCGS. Presumably S-11c, Low R.3. The PCGS insert states Lettered Edge, but does not distinguish between the Single Leaf and Double Leaves edge variants. The more available S-11c is assumed. Milky brick-red fields contrast with tan-brown legends and devices. Liberty's hair has a vertical strike of silver color. A few minor edge dings and a small area of grainy surface in front of the nose, but all legends are bold and the types are clear.

A sizable majority of 1793 Wreath Cents possess a vine and bars edge, and lettered edge pieces are limited to the scarce Sheldon 11b and 11c varieties.
