1794 MS 65 Brown PCGS. S-26, R.2. EAC graded MS 61. Superb, lustrous, medium-brown surfaces are faded from the original mint color, very faint traces of which are still visible on both sides. A dark reddish colored area is noted behind the lowest curl. Perfect in every respect except for a small planchet chip out of the right top of B in LIBERTY. Well struck and centered. An extraordinary cent and of utmost importance to the type, date, or variety collector. Tied for finest known with possibly two other examples, one of which has been in hiding since 1912. Late die state, the reverse shows heavy die breaks through the E in STATES and through the first S as well as prominent die clash marks.

1794 1C Head of 1795 AU55 PCGS. S-72, R.2. The Exact Head of 1795, which has the lowest hair curl pointing directly down instead of in a curl. A die crack wanders from the rim between TY in LIBERTY across her hair to the cap, and mint-made clashmarks are noted on the upper obverse and lower reverse. The deep mahogany-brown surfaces have only a solitary minor contact mark beneath Liberty's ear. Moderate granularity is mentioned for accuracy. The dies are rotated a few degrees counterclockwise. 1794 1C Head of 1795 AU55 NGC. S-67, R.3. The obverse features bold clashmarks (as made) in the field near the portrait, and the right side of the first A in AMERICA is recut. Generally light chocolate-brown in color, with a hint of olive hues where luster persists. Careful scrutiny reveals a few inconsequential contact marks on the portrait, and the reverse field has a couple of small mint-made laminations. A splendidly detailed representative of this conditionally challenging variety. NGC has certified three pieces as Sheldon-67, and the other two examples are in AG and Good grades. (PCGS# 1365)

1794 AU 53 PCGS. S-43, High R.2. An incredibly attractive, high grade example, known as the "Weak OF" variety. Other than OF, all the other design elements are very sharply struck with the finely detailed hair curls being the focal point of the obverse. Tobacco-brown color overall with a small spot at the top of the hair and faint trace of a fingerprint in the right obverse field. A small abrasion can also be made out on the highpoint of Liberty's cheek by way of identification. EAC specialists will undoubtedly net grade this piece several points lower because of the above mentioned defects, but for the person who wishes a high grade, well struck 1794 cent this lovely piece will certainly be a pleasing addition to a type or date collection. 1794 AU 55. S-43, R.2. Nicknamed the "Short Bust" variety by Maris because of the truncated length of the rear bust. The characteristic die break above the A in STATES, the weakly impressed OF, the taller numerals in the date, and the distinct hair curls all establish the die variety of this coin. A die break that originates below the 9 and passes through the 7 and 1 to the lowest curl identifies this piece as a later die state. Although relatively common for the issue, Sheldon observes that this variety is difficult to locate without problems above the VF level. Soft medium brown toning overlays both sides of this example, although we note a few inconspicuous areas of darker toning scattered across the obverse. The surfaces and rims are remarkably clean and exhibit one abrasion above the E in STATES that we feel warrants mention. Both the obverse and the reverse are well centered and, while not complete in all areas, the denticles are sharp and readily evident throughout. A well detailed example of this early large cent that copper enthusiasts should welcome with strong bids. (PCGS# 1365)

1794 1C Head of 1795 Fine 12 NGC. VG10 EAC. S-68, Die State V, R.5. The famous bisecting break variety, though early die states exist without evidence of this obverse crack. Walter Breen considered this variety to be a very small portion of the December 16, 1794 delivery of large cents from the coiner to the Mint Treasurer. This later die state has the obverse crack fully developed with the area above and left of the crack on a higher plane, giving the appearance of more wear. Above average surfaces for the grade with pleasing medium brown color and only a few very small patches of corrosion. The surfaces are otherwise free of blemishes.

Close examination with a glass reveals fine porosity over each side; yet, because of the high grade one notices a dim glimmer of original luster still surrounding the obverse devices. 1794 S-63, R.3. Sharpness of XF 40, net XF 40. The Fallen 4, or Drunken Die-Cutter's obverse. A stunning and exceptional specimen of this seldom-found-choice variety. The color is medium-chocolate throughout, and the coin was struck on a good planchet. Well centered and struck, with every device sharp and crisp. There simply are no significant handling marks--a few stray ticks on either side, but no rim bumps to distract the eye.
A delightful variety that exudes charisma, the Fallen 4 is a result of the date punch being placed far too low relative to the other digits, the die engraver ran into a problem, after engraving the 179, the bust of Liberty was already located where the 4 needed to placed. Rather than overlap the 4 and the bust, the engraver decided to squeeze the 4 in place between the bust and the edge, resulting in a disorderly and random appearance. Furthermore, the placement of the letters of LIBERTY shows inexperience or downright carelessness, being either too close, or too far apart. This is also one of the two curious "button cap" obverse dies, with a small button-like dot near the lower edge of the cap, perhaps this was a way of signing his work, or a way of enhancing the original design.
