1801 1C 1/000 Fine Details NCS. VG10 EAC. NC-3, High R.6. All known examples are in the same die state with perfect obverse and reverse dies. Ted Naftzger's envelope labels this the "Smith Variety," for it was discovered by C. Douglas Smith on February 4, 1950. At the time Dr. Sheldon had Penny Whimsy published in 1957, only this coin and the Smith discovery coin were known. Today, a total of 14 different examples are known, but this specimen remains the finest. Del Bland grades this VG8, other observers call it VG10, and Naftzger considered it to be Fine 12. Such are the difficulties of assigning a "net grade" to a coin when considering any imperfections. This is a very attractive two-tone cent with dark steel color in the fields and lovely light tan devices. The surfaces are not perfectly smooth, although they are attractive. Obverse scratches are old and fully blended with the surrounding fields, such that they are not obtrusive. NCS Obverse Scratched.

1801 1C 1/000 MS62 Brown NGC. S-223, R.1. This variety's obverse was first used on the S-222 with a different reverse, having a normal fraction spaced 1 00. Here the fraction is the impossible 1/000, while the obverse has the "straight date" as on S-222. The surfaces are even medium brown with faint underlying red in evidence. The obverse is well struck, especially on Liberty's hair, while the reverse is soft, as usual. The only mark of note is a shallow planchet flaw in the field just above the ribbon. (PCGS# 1464)

1801 1C 1/000. NC-3, B-15, High R.6--Corroded--NCS. VF Details. VG7 EAC. C. Douglas Smith discovered this very rare variety in 1950. It has the 1/000 reverse, but here CENT is higher above the bows than on any other 1801 reverse, and the berry right of ONE is even with the middle of the E. The top of the date numerals are about in a straight line. The base of Y is broken and corrected by hand, and the point of Liberty's top hair curl is below the right side of the upright of B. This coin is evenly corroded on both sides, and shows evidence of smoothing in the right obverse field. However, the date and LIBERTY are plain and separated from the rims, with the blunt 1 tops in the date clear and some deep drapery folds and hair detail in evidence. About half of the obverse dentilation is present. On the reverse the absurd fraction is bold. All reverse details are plainly visible, although the legend is weak at STA and O. About four-fifths of the reverse dentilation is present. The planchet is dark-brown, almost black, with lighter highpoints. Examination under a glass reveals a small circular planchet dig equidistant between the wreath and D S, with a couple of smaller hits also on the reverse. Del Bland's extended Condition Census in Breen's large cent Encyclopedia comprises 14 coins ranging from VG8 to Fair-2 according to EAC standards. This marks a prime opportunity for some large cent specialist to acquire this prized rarity.

1801 1C 1/000 AU58 NGC. VF35 EAC. S-223, Die State III, R.1. Despite the prominent rim breaks over LIBERTY on the obverse, this is only an intermediate die state. Later states have these rim breaks advanced much farther, and the terminal state has an additional large rim break at the end of the drapery. This is the second most common die variety of 1801, behind only S-224. The error fraction places additional demand on this variety from Red Book collectors. The surfaces are dark chocolate-brown with underlying tan color. Traces of luster remain visible on both sides. While the surfaces have a few minor blemishes, this is an attractive cent. The reverse is bluntly struck as nearly always, with little leaf detail remaining.

1801 1C 1/000. S-223, B-17, R.1. VF25 NGC. Fine 15 EAC. Die State VI. Breen calls this terminal die state of this variety "very rare." In addition to the prominent obverse rim breaks above IB and RTY, a huge break now joins the rim with the drapery at the front of the bust, extending downward about halfway to the 1 in the date. There is a small reverse rim break above ED. This coin is on a glossy, medium-brown but slightly rough planchet. Examination under magnification reveals a couple of small marks in the left obverse field. Other smaller marks are expected on a coin of this grade. Another prime opportunity for the large cent specialist to acquire an attractive coin from a rare die state.

Walter Breen's Large Cent Encyclopedia notes that this "blundered fraction" variety was struck in 1802, after the 1802-dated S-225, S-226, and NC-1 varieties. Die steel was a rare commodity; the Mint used whatever dies were serviceable and paid little heed (and did not report) the dates on coinage, only the years of their production. This S-223 representative shows a much heavier rim break above IB (this obverse, with smaller rim break, was first used on the S-222). An even heavier rim break has formed above RT, and it now extends down the right curve of the R and covers the left serif of the T. A reverse crack runs from the rim to the D. This coin is boldly detailed on the obverse, with good delineation in Liberty's hair and traces of highpoint wear. The central reverse is weakly struck, however, with NE barely visible and some inner leaves lacking definition. Examination with a glass reveals some small nicks on Liberty's cheek and neck, and a slight planchet dig right of the date. Other small contact marks are grade-consistent. On a smooth, medium-brown planchet, an appealing and collectible example of this popular variety. Envelope Included. (PCGS# 1464)

1801 1C 1/000. S-223, B-17, R.1. Fine 15 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. Die State V. On this coin, apparently from late in this die state, the rightmost rim break now extends laterally from right of the E all the way to the Y. Most of the tops of RT are engulfed by the break. The break above IB is heavy. There is as yet no sign of a rim break at the end of the drapery, the hallmark of Die State VI. This appealing coin is struck on a medium-brown planchet and shows many small, grade-consistent contact marks, none worthy of individual mention save for a small dig near the first S on the reverse. The strike is superior, however, and all details are bold though moderately worn. Envelope Included. (PCGS# 1464)
