1819 1C Small Date MS64 Red and Brown NGC. MS64 EAC. N-10, Early Die State, R.4. This is a scarce variety and a Condition Census example; and it is one of two similar coins owned by Floyd Starr! In his reference on the middle date cents, Bill Noyes listed this coin and the other Starr coin at the same grade, calling each MS65 and tied for finest known. Del Bland also considers the two Starr coins to be equally fine, grading each MS65. Even though we have described it as MS64, the fact remains that experts agree this cent is tied with the other Starr coin as finest known for the N-10 variety.

Although it has considerable color, it is important to remember that this is not a Randall Hoard coin. There are only about five or six Mint State examples of this variety in all grades. This example is an early die state with nearly full dentilation on both sides, as well as strong central relief on the reverse. The surfaces are exceptional, with nearly full red mint color on both sides, just beginning to tone to medium brown and steel. Just a few trivial blemishes are noted. This is a lovely cent for the advanced specialist or connoisseur. The obverse is plated in Newcomb for variety 10, and the reverse is plated as reverse H.

1819 1C Small Date MS65 Red and Brown NGC. MS63 EAC. N-8, Late Die State, R.1. Although this is a Randall Hoard variety, and hundreds of Mint State examples are known, few can match this coin for overall quality. The obverse has extensive orange mint luster, beginning to transform into light brown color. The reverse is mostly brown and steel, yet with considerable underlying mint color. A lovely example of this popular type coin. NGC has only certified five examples of this date as MS65 Red and Brown with none finer. This is the only Gem quality N-8 cent they have certified. From a late die state with border dentils virtually nonexistent, peripheral design elements pulled to the border, and some central reverse weakness.

1819 1C Small Date MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. N-9, R.1. A later die state example from the Randall Hoard. The R in AMERICA is doubled, with an extra point of the tail visible at the lower right, but with the doubling above this letter weak and blurry. This was a minor component of the hoard, which consisted mostly of 1816, 1818, and 1820 cents. A pleasing example with full luster and attractively blended color consisting of olive-brown and pale blue, in addition to generous portions of original red. A minor corrosion spot is present on the rim at star 10. EAC 60+.

One of the finer examples of this common Randall Hoard issue graded by PCGS, and currently tied with a small group of 9 graded as such, with none seen in higher grades in this or the Red category. Excellent eye appeal for the grade, with enough original Red to please the eye, and surface quality which shows no problems spots or nicks. Identifiable by a tiny nick behind Liberty's eye, and another below the Y of LIBERTY. Later die state with very weak dentils, which was caused by die lapping. An impressive example for the collector who needs this issue. (PCGS# 1607)
