1826 1C --Double Struck With Second Strike 20% Off Center--AU50 NGC. N-5, High R.2. Traces of the original, centered strike were not entirely obliterated by the second strike, which is off-center north-northeast by about 20%. The first, centered strike shows traces of stars 1 through 3 and star 13, as well as all four digits of the date. This pleasing medium brown coin shows a bit of highpoint wear, as expected, and a decent strike on the second off-center impression, with a few slight abrasions. EAC 25. (PCGS# 1645)

1826 1C --Struck 20% Off Center--AU58 NGC. N-5, High R.2 for the variety. Struck widely off center toward 2 o'clock. Most of AMERICA and the right side stars are absent, however, the date, the wreath, and the hair bun are complete. A bold chocolate-brown example. Light wear on Liberty's forehead prevents an Uncirculated grade, but the unusual appearance of this Cent presumably led to an early retirement from commerce. A faint abrasion in the field before the O in ONE provides the only remotely mentionable contact. (PCGS# 1645)

1826 1C MS62 Brown NGC. MS60+ EAC. N-1, Intermediate Die State, R.2. Del Bland has recorded this example at the top spot in his Census, tied with a few others for honors as finest known. An intermediate die state with a rim break just right of star 6, resembling that seen on N-5, except the latter is over star 6. Most details are sharply defined with only a few stars showing weakness. This is a lovely cent with deep chocolate-brown surfaces and soft luster. The obverse has wisps of tan and faded red mint color. The reverse is similar with pale gold toning in addition to the other colors. The obverse die has a diagonal bar in the field just right of the date, leading some to call this an overdate, which of course it is not. John Wright repeated a comment from Dr. Sheldon: "Doubtless as a joke, somebody seems to have sold one of these to a beginner as an 'overdate'. Now the joke has spread, and collectors in general are often invited to pay a generous price for this 'overdate' as part of their initiation to cent collecting."

1826 1C Cent--10% Off Center--AU55 NGC. N-5. The impression is 10% off center at 9 o'clock with an extra lip of flan at the right borders. The date is fully discernible, as are all features save for the outer points of stars 1-4 and the tops of the letters in UNITED STATES. Rich chocolate-brown toning envelops both sides with flickers of crimson color scattered over the reverse. An interesting type to locate with this error.

1826 1C MS65 Brown NGC. MS60+ EAC. N-4, Early Die State, R.2. Examples of this die pairing are from a rather consistent or stable state of the dies with little deterioration. This example is fifth or sixth finest for the variety although two Gem quality examples have not been seen for several decades. Lovely steel-blue and olive-brown surfaces are blended with lighter tan. Hints of mint red peek through on the obverse. Except for a couple tiny marks on Liberty's cheek and chin, the surfaces are virtually perfect. This is an exceptional example that will certainly please the connoisseur.

1826 1C MS63 Brown NGC. AU55 EAC. N-3, Early Die State, R.3. Full obverse and reverse dentilation, although the left reverse border is typically weak. This is an early die state without any rim crumbling on the obverse, and a sharp center dot on the reverse. The center dot faded away in later die states. A single Gem quality MS65 example of this variety exists, along with eight coins that Del Bland has described as MS60. After that, the Census drops quickly through AU55 to AU50. This example is one of four AU55 coins recorded in Del's notes. Splendid light tan surfaces have darker brown toning in addition to wisps of faded mint color. A couple tiny abrasions are visible on the obverse, while the reverse is choice.

1826 1C N-9, R.3. MS61 Brown NGC. AU50 EAC. Late Die State. A reverse die crack is visible through the left ribbon to the left edge of the knot, continuing between EN of CENT, and up to the right side of N in ONE. The surfaces have intermingled olive and light brown color and are pleasing for the grade. The design elements are sharply defined. A minor rim bruise is noted at 3 o'clock on the obverse, and a few minute marks occur on Liberty's cheek.
