1835 1C Head of 1834 Small 8 and Stars MS62 Brown NGC. AU55 EAC. N-11, Early Die State, R.5. This is the finest specimen available of the variety, one of about 45 examples known. The only finer example is the Clapp-ANS proof. Despite the pedigree, this coin is not plated in Newcomb. At one time, it was thought that this example might be a proof strike, but that is not the case. Ted Naftzger had "Proof, blunt" written on his envelope, with the word Proof later crossed out. John Wright noted: "the AU (Newcomb:666-Starr:306) may be a mishandled Proof." The obverse is light olive-brown with some orange color around the devices. The reverse is similar with some lighter tan. Typical of this variety, the border is sharp and broad, the central devices somewhat softly defined, and most of the stars are blunt.

1835 1C Head of 1834 Small 8 and Stars MS61 Brown NGC. AU50 EAC. N-19, Usual Die State, High R.5. Not only is this the second finest known, but it was the second example of this variety, discovered in 1982. John Wright told the story in The Cent Book: "The discovery piece had been lurking in my set as 'intermediate N14,' and was recognized by me as an unpublished variety in early 1982 as I was preparing a presentation on 1835 Young Head varieties for the EAC '82 Educational Forum. It was first announced there and was first published in Penny-Wise #89 (March 1982). Bob Grellman went home from that meeting, checked his own 35N14, and discovered the second one (AU)."

This variety is a combination of the obverse die from Newcomb-7 in a late die state with the reverse of Newcomb-14 in an early die state. The obverse has prominent annular swelling (Wright said it looks like a donut) with considerable die rust on Liberty's face. The reverse is nearly perfect with sharp design features and bold border dentilation. A faint die crack joins the tops of AME and is nearly invisible. This is a lovely example with splendid olive-brown color accented by hints of original red around the devices. The surfaces are excellent.

1835 1C Head of 1834 Small 8 and Stars MS62 Brown NGC. AU50 EAC. N-12, Early Die State, R.4. The obverse is the Newcomb plate coin and the reverse appears to match as well. On the reverse, several toning splashes appear on the coin, but are not visible in the Newcomb plate. One pedigree mark that does appear to match on the coin and the plate is a small nick located between the leaf tip and berry below the right base of T in UNITED. Grading continues to be a moving target. In 1984, Stack's graded this coin XF45 and the ANS coin AU50. In 1991, Bill Noyes graded both coins AU50, stating that they are tied for finest known. In 2003, however, the same author recorded the ANS coin as AU55 and this example as XF. Del Bland has recorded this example as AU50 and tied with the ANS coin for finest known. Chestnut-brown surfaces have splashes of maroon and steel toning. The obverse has several peripheral die cracks, but no rim break at upper right. The ANS coin is slightly finer than this example, which is second finest known, and finest in collectors' hands.

1835 1C Head of 1834 Small 8 and Stars MS60 Brown NGC. XF45 EAC. N-13, Early Die State, R.4. The bottom curve of the digit 5 is doubled, with the usually (always) seen die crack joining this extra curve. A secondary crack exits the lower right curve for a short distance to join the main crack. In slightly later states, this forms a solid break, appearing as a tail off the lower right curve. This example is undoubtedly one of the earliest strikes from the die, and still retains some prooflike appearance in the obverse fields from initial die polishing. The reverse shows light swelling and flowlines. Del Bland lists three "MS60" examples in his Census, but none of those have been seen during the last 50 years. Only three confirmed AU examples appear above this coin in his Census. Although lightly hairlined, the surfaces are attractive with deep steel-brown color. The obverse has reflective fields and the reverse has flowlined fields.

The reverse shows the typical peripheral die cracks that traverse all of the reverse legends. The glossy textured surfaces are lightly worn overall, with ample definition over the major design elements. They are charcoal-brown on the obverse and mahogany on the reverse. Envelope Included. This is the first of two varieties that were not included in the Newcomb reference, which is surprising as it was discovered in 1914 and described in print soon after. John Wright notes that this variety was actually discovered by A.C. Gies, and was described by Dr. Charles McGirk as his number 1V for 1835. Not until 1952 was it rediscovered by Breen, and numerous examples have been located since that time. Today, this variety is on the border of Rarity-4 with about 75 examples known. This example remains in a tie for second finest, the best known just reaching the VF20 grade level per EAC standards. The surfaces have reddish-brown and steel color, and are burnished, although not obviously so. NCS Burnished.

The reverse appears to be the same coin plated in Newcomb, although a positive match has not yet been possible. All cracks described by John Wright are visible, but none of the rim breaks. A die crack exits the top of E in AMERICA, and gives this letter the appearance of a doubled serif. This example has dark steel-brown surfaces with light, evenly distributed corrosion on both sides. NCS Corroded.

Not until 1952 was it rediscovered by Breen, and numerous examples have been located since that time. Today, this variety is on the border of Rarity-4 with about 75 specimens known. This example remains in a tie for second finest, the best known just reaching the VF20 grade level per EAC standards. It is very well detailed with a few scattered marks and moderate wear on Liberty's portrait. It appears to have been well struck, from dies that were rotated clockwise by approximately thirty-five degrees, with some flatness noted on the obverse stars. A top-end example of an unlisted rarity, and a prize to be won tonight.

Late die states are characterized by weak dentilation and a plain die crack through the bases of the date. On the reverse, the legend exhibits considerable weakness. Several examples of this variety are graded similarly, and all of these coins are tied for fifth finest known. Lovely olive-brown color is accented by considerable deep orange mint luster.

The reverse is rotated about 30 degrees clockwise. This is an intermediate die state with all of the cracks described by John Wright, but without any evidence of lapping or polishing of the reverse die. Though this is a scarce variety, the Condition Census is quite low, without a single strictly EAC graded Mint State example known. In fact, this example is tied for third finest of the variety, according to Del Bland's Census notes. Both sides have attractive olive-brown and tan coloration with splashes of darker steel toning, positively matching the example illustrated on the Newcomb plate.

This example is tied for eighth finest known for the variety. Despite its scarcity, this is the fourth most common "Head of 34" variety among all 1835 large cents. Only very light wear is visible on the highest points of the obverse and the reverse. The surfaces have frosty medium brown color intermingled with tiny splashes of lighter tan and darker steel toning.
