1835 1C Head of 1834 Large 8 and Stars AU58 NGC. VF35 EAC. N-9, Intermediate Die State, R.4. Obverse and reverse die cracks are all present and strong, although the reverse has not yet developed a rim break over AMERICA. The N-9 variety shares the same obverse die as N-1, and these two varieties provide the entire population of the Large 8, Large Stars type. Several examples of this variety have been similarly graded, but only four finer coins have been identified, according to Del Bland's Census notes. This is a pleasing olive-brown example with some hints of darker toning.

1835 1C Head of 1834 Large 8 and Stars MS64 Brown NGC. AU55 EAC. N-1, Late Die State, R.1. The difference between early die state and late die state examples of this variety depends solely on a short die crack from the main obverse crack to the border between stars 11 and 12. This example has the late state crack, although it is quite faint. Newcomb-1 is the common Large Date and Stars variety; the only other die combination of the type is the scarce N-9. Splendid surfaces have frosty light brown color with pale blue toning over the highpoints. Wisps of pale orange mint color are present around the devices, especially on the obverse.

1835 1C Head of 1834 Large 8 and Stars MS63 Brown NGC. AU55 EAC. N-1, Early Die State, R.1. Widely doubled profile from the top of Liberty's forehead to the chin. This is the last year that double profiles occurred with any regularity, as the old coining presses were slowly replaced with newer equipment. The obverse and reverse have sharp central details with peripheral weakness, especially among the stars. Both sides have medium brown color with some frosty cartwheel luster. Streaks of darker brown cross the obverse and to a lesser extent, the reverse.

1835 1C Large 8 and Stars. N-9, R.4. Good 4 EAC. Not certified. A double struck example of the terminal die state for this variety. The reverse has a large rim break joining the tops of ERIC. In his reference on the middle date cents, John Wright noted: "Two multi-struck examples in this [terminal] state attest to the complete catastrophic failure of this die, likely accounting for the scarcity of the variety." A most impressive terminal error, despite its low grade. Moderately abraded dark brown surfaces.

1835 1C Large 8 and Stars AU50 Uncertified. N-1, High R.1. The 18 in date is much larger than 35, and the top of the E in CENT is broadly recut. This glossy Cent exhibits rose and lilac patina. Liberty's profile is lightly strike doubled. A tiny rim clip (as made) above the fourth star, and a faint fingerprint is noted on the lower left obverse field.
