1837 1C Medium Letters MS65 Brown NGC. MS60 EAC. N-17, Intermediate Die State, R.4. Collector Floyd T. Starr acquired this coin as part of his purchase of the Henry C. Hines Collection, then sold it with his other duplicates in the 1949 ANA sale. He obviously reconsidered, and when given an opportunity to reacquire it in the 1956 Penn-Ohio auction, he again added it to his cabinet. John Wright noted that he had seen just one example of this variety from a perfect obverse die without any cracks or rim breaks. This example was struck soon thereafter, with several obverse and reverse die cracks, but no obverse rim break. Tied for third finest known. Only two better examples have been identified, and both were last seen in the R.E. Naftzger, Jr. Collection. As the next best, this pretty penny should sell for a pretty penny. A few of the leaves on the reverse are bluntly struck, but all other details are boldly defined. The surfaces have frosty luster with excellent olive and steel-brown color. Just a trace of original mint color is hidden in the devices.

1837 1C Medium Letters MS64 Brown NGC. MS60 EAC. N-15, Intermediate Die State, R.4. All of the cracks and rim breaks described by John Wright are present on this example, but the line under CENT remains visible. The latest die states show only faint traces of this design feature. This variety represents the first use of the obverse die with the vertical cracks at stars 3 and 4 only lightly visible. On Newcomb-2, these same cracks are fully developed. According to Del Bland's Condition Census, just two examples of this variety survive in Mint State, the other example is slightly finer. Both sides have splendid chestnut-brown color with hints of olive. Splashes of original pale orange mint luster are still visible on the reverse. For the advanced variety collector, this opportunity should not be missed.

1837 1C Medium Letters MS66 Brown PCGS. N-8, R.1. This is the early die state of the die marriage also known as N-7, determinable by the presence of die scratches above MERI (as struck). The obverse is chocolate-brown, while the reverse shows a few traces of red mostly on the left side and in the wreath. The strike is sharp except on the left obverse stars. Housed in a green label PCGS holder that does not specify the Red Book variety. EAC 60+. Population: 3 in 66 Brown, 1 finer with the Brown designation (11/06). (PCGS# 1735)

1837 1C Medium Letters MS66 Brown PCGS. Thick, rich, glossy textured toning envelops both sides in medium brown color. At direct angles, the surfaces seem to reveal lilac tinged accents, but there is not a single distracting blemish. Both sides are sharply struck, this despite the fact that the reverse die was cracked through the words STATES and OF in the legend. It would be difficult for us to imagine a more visually impressive 1837 Medium Letters Cent with this color designation, even if one were actually known to PCGS. Population: 2 in 66 Brown, with none finer (9/02). (PCGS# 1735)

The reverse has olive and lighter tan color, also with frosty mint luster.

1837 1C Plain Cords, Medium Letters. N-2, R.2. AU53 NGC. VF35 EAC. Vertical Crack Stars 3 and 4; Weak Legend, No Reverse Cracks. This is the terminal die state for the variety, with the entire area above the horizontal crack and left of star 4 broken away in a massive rim break. We have checked several of the major large cent sales over the last couple decades, and do not find any comparable examples that have been offered for sale. Pleasing chestnut and golden-brown color with lightly abraded yet attractive surfaces.

A spindly die crack on the upper reverse from 11 to 1 o'clock affirms the die marriage, along with die lines above MERI, a strong reverse center dot, and a die dot above E in CENT. The C in CENT is recut. A small planchet flaw (as made) rests below the 7 in the date, but the glossy and lustrous tan-brown surfaces are exquisitely preserved. EAC 60. (PCGS# 1735)

1837 1C Medium Letters MS66 Brown NGC. The surfaces are predominately a light shade of tan-brown color. Although designated as brown, there is considerable crimson color within the crevices of the designs. Well struck in the centers, while the stars as usual are somewhat flat. A well preserved Gem. The reverse border has tiny planchet flaws from 3 o'clock to 5 o'clock. The obverse has a lengthy die crack (as struck) from star 3 past star 8, while the reverse has a die crack (as struck) across OF AME. (PCGS# 1735)
