1839 1C Type of 1840 MS66 Brown PCGS. N-8, R.1. Incorrectly labeled by PCGS as Head of 1838. This is the only Petite Head variety for the year. The mint settled on this design after much experimentation in 1839. The lustrous and glossy surfaces have a tan-brown color with red-orange accents in selected recesses. Boldly struck aside from the upper stars and attractively undisturbed. Population: 1 in 66, none finer (11/05).

1839 1C Type of 1840. N-8, R.1. MS63 Brown NGC. AU50 EAC. This is the exact design type used from late in 1839 through 1843. The obverse features the petite Braided Hair design as envisioned by Christian Gobrecht. There appears to be little variation in strike, although this example has clear and bold border dentils on both sides. Pleasing medium brown surfaces with only minor surface marks on either side.

1839 1C Type of 1840. N-8, R.1. MS63 Brown NGC. AU50 EAC. This late die state is identified as such only by the weakened dentils of the obverse and reverse borders. There are no die cracks or other die defects that would confirm the order of striking. Pleasing medium brown with delicate tan and darker brown toning on the reverse. Slightly abraded yet quite attractive.
