1839 1C Type of 1840 MS65 Red and Brown PCGS. N-8, R.1, the only 'Head of 1840' variety and the only die marriage for the year with the 1 in the date completely left of the bust truncation. A well struck Gem specimen with smooth surfaces, satiny luster, and lovely intermingled reddish-golden and tan-brown color.

1839 1C Type of 1840 MS66 Red and Brown NGC. MS65 EAC. N-8, R.1. This is the transitional variety of 1839, introducing the new Petite Head obverse design of 1840. Only this single Newcomb-8 variety features the new obverse design. This example is fully struck and has excellent eye appeal. Each side has considerable brilliant orange luster around the devices with bluish-brown coloration. The surfaces are nearly flawless with only a tiny blemish in the obverse field next to Liberty's nose and a tiny lamination defect confined to the obverse rim below the 1 in the date. A quick review of the NGC Census data reveals the existence of five different MS66 Red and Brown examples of this variety, the only five such cents given this color designation. Del Bland's Condition Census notes indicate that as many as 20 Gem quality examples survive today. This transitional issue is collected by both middle date and late date collectors.
