1856 1C PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. N-5. With broad, squared off borders and appreciable reflectivity in the fields, this coin is unmistakable as a proof. This coin was struck from the same reverse die that the Mint used to delivery proof 1857 N-3 Large Cents, and it is identifiable by a small defect on the leaves before the denomination ONE CENT that resembles a misplaced berry. Pale olive-brown tinting overlays the otherwise lustrous obverse with plenty of orange-red luster in evidence. The reverse is more extensively toned in medium brown color that yields to orange and purple undertones at direct angles. Sharply struck throughout with no blemishes that would call into question the validity of the PR65 designation. NGC and PCGS combined report only four examples in PR65 Red and Brown, and there are only two specimens finer with this color designation (10/02).

1856 1C PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. N-5, Low R.5. A proof-only Newcomb variety noted for a tiny die lump on the N in UNITED and a series of faint, nearly vertical die lines near the Y in LIBERTY. The stars and denticles are razor-sharp, as befits a proof, and the fields are moderately reflective, especially on the predominantly Red obverse. A couple of small spots on the portrait do not distract. Population: 10 in 64 Red and Brown, 4 finer (2/04).

1856 1C PR64 Red and Brown NGC. Only one variety is known for proof 1856 Large Cents, from the Newcomb-5 dies. This die pairing shows a slanting 5 and three minute die file marks down from the earlobe as the most easily recognized diagnostics. The fields are deeply mirrored on each side and the rims are wide and squared off. Fully struck in all areas, of course, the surfaces have a deep blue patina with occasional accents of cherry-red around the devices. A small spot in the field between stars 4 and 5 is the most useful pedigree identifier on this lovely, high grade proof. Population: 2 in 64 Red and Brown, 3 finer (7/02). (PCGS# 1998)
