1870 2C MS65 Red PCGS. In 1870 the mintage of business strike two-cent pieces was halved again, as it had each of the previous two years, to a figure that for the first time in the series was less than 1 million pieces. The present example is two-toned, with orange and peach dominating the obverse, with lime-green accents, and honey-gold prevalent on the reverse, accented by lemon-yellow. The strike is bold, with minimal carbon flecks. There are a couple of die cracks in the stress areas, namely through the date and through the reverse legend. Heavy die polish lines are also noted at the top of the shield. All these factors point to a Philadelphia Mint trying to conserve resources by coining as many pieces as possible from each die, for a coinage denomination whose fate was undoubtedly already obvious. An extremely appealing and interesting coin. Among the highest graded, with only 20 examples graded so fine at both major services. Population: 12 in 65, 0 finer (12/05). (PCGS# 3608)
