1917-D 25C Type Two MS 67 Full Head PCGS. When evaluating the desirability of boldly struck Type Two quarters, misinformed collectors become fixated upon Liberty's head and ignore the other highpoints of the design. Noted numismatic author J. H. Cline, however, states that this D-mint issue is the first of the Type Two deliveries to display prominent striking incompleteness throughout the design. When grading extant representatives, Cline cautions collectors that, "Most features are moderately well struck with some concession to be made [for grading], such as: weak inner shield, but strong date and folds in gown or vice versa." It is not, therefore, hard for us to imagine a Mint State representative of this issue with Full Head definition and below average eye appeal.

Lest students of the series lose heart at the grim realities of the issue, we are proud to announce that exquisite examples of the 1917-D Type Two Standing Liberty quarter do exist in today's numismatic community. The present Condition Census piece is one of the 2 finest certified specimens between both NGC and PCGS (9/99). In addition to Liberty's head, the powerful strike extends equally to the shield, gown lines, and eagle's breast feathers. The heavily frosty faces and mark-free condition serve to raise the eye appeal to previously unimagined heights. Although basically brilliant, the obverse displays a pale champagne cast at select angles of observation. Needless to say, lighthearted bidders would be wise to surrender the auction floor to collectors who understand that this lot represents an opportunity of the utmost rarity.

1917-D 25C Type Two MS66 Full Head PCGS. An untoned silver-blue specimen, with full head details including a visible earhole, although a couple of the shield rivets are weak, as usual on Type Two examples, and corresponding softness on the eagle's breast. The radiant, lustrous surfaces are beautiful and distraction-free, however, and higher-graded examples are virtually nonexistent. Population: 15 in 66 Full Head, 1 finer (7/06).

1917-D 25C Type Two MS66 Full Head PCGS. Formerly offered as lot 6008 in our 2001 Atlanta Sale, where it was described as, "The luster is a curious mixture of satin and frosty qualities, the latter dominating in the form of appreciable cartwheel effects. Razor sharp striking definition is noted throughout, particularly over Liberty's head, the inner shield rivets, and the lowermost drapery folds. Mostly untoned, the surfaces do reveal a few traces of golden-tan patina at certain angles. With a modest mintage of 6.2 million pieces and a frequency of only 10% with Full Head definition, the '17-D Type Two is one of the more underrated branch mint issues in this popular series." 1917-D 25C Type Two MS65 Full Head PCGS. The 1917-D has a mintage of less than half its P-mint Type Two counterpart, yet its rarity prices it at four to five times greater. It is actually quite an elusive issue in high grade and with full detail on Liberty's head. The head details on this piece are fully brought up and the mint luster sparkles over each side.
