1884 T$1 PR65 PCGS. One of only 10 specimens known. This is the Clint Hestor "Menjou"-Baldenhofer-Wolfson-French coin, and one of the finer examples known. The obverse and reverse are brilliant white with just a trace of dark toning near the devices visible with a loupe. On the obverse we note a curling lint mark low and left of star three, touching the lower left point and curving up toward the rim above the outer point of that star, in the general shape of a question mark. There are also three tiny nicks near the inside point of the eleventh star. For further plate matching, the reverse has a tiny graze in the field left of the U in UNITED and a minute speck in the field below the E of AMERICA. All in all, this is a beautiful coin which is stark white save for a hint of dark gold as noted along the left wing of the eagle. The fields, devices and surfaces are wonderfully clean for the grade, and this coin has all the appeal one would expect for a Gem Proof were it a common date. Although the 1884 Trade dollar is hardly a common date.

The idea of having a competing coin to circulate in the orient was hatched during the early 1870s. At first, patterns were coined of "commercial dollars" which were to serve this purpose. Other countries produced their own silver coins for overseas trade, and America had not addressed this important issue. Compared with regular issue silver dollars then current, the new silver content was increased slightly to 420 grains in order for them to compete with other foreign coins then in circulation as trade coins. By the time 1873 rolled around, Congress decided to call their new coin a "Trade dollar" and the appropriate legislation was passed. Coinage began in earnest, and it is worth stating that the western mints were the primary benefactors of this new coin. Both the Carson City and San Francisco Mint churned out millions of the new Trade dollars, many for export overseas to the orient (those mints being much closer to this important tra (PCGS# 7064)

1884 T$1 PR63 PCGS. Ex: Norweb. The 1884 T$1 is a coin that needs no introduction. Numismatists young and old, novice or experienced, can quote the number of extant examples and probably relate one or two facts concerning the production and history of this issue. The true story of this fabled numismatic rarity is, however, not widely known. The reason for this is clear: popular numismatic references such as Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins: 1722-1977, Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins, and Q. David Bowers' Silver Dollars and T$1s of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia, either state explicitly or imply that this issue was created clandestinely by parties within the Mint, at night, and perhaps at a later date, for the well-connected Philadelphia dealer William K. Idler. Research done in 1988 by the late Carl W. A. Carlson, on the other hand, proves that the 1884 T$1 was struck officially and under the supervision of Mint officials. The following commentary is based on the evidence that Carlson brought to light in Stack's June 1988 catalog of the Frank Sprinkle Collection.

The "Die Record Book" kept by A. W. Straub, foreman of the Die Makers' Room, clearly records receipt from the Engraving Department of one obverse and one reverse die for the proof 1884 T$1 on January 3 of that year. Straub supervised the transfer of these dies from the Die Makers' Room to the Coining Department when Superintendent Colonel A. Loudon Snowden ordered proof production to begin. This most likely happened within the first week of January. The first coins produced with these dies were copper trial pieces (Judd-1732, Pollock-1943), a clear indication that the Mint had plans for large scale production. Today, three or four copper die trial pieces are extant, two of which have been silver plated. We do not know how many silver impressions of the proof 1884 T$1 followed the copper die trial (PCGS# 7064)

1884 PR 63 NGC. The history of the United States Trade dollar is one that is checkered with abuses, misuses, and deceit. More than 35 years ago a definitive history was written of the Trade dollar by John Willem. The subtitle of Willem's book sums up the coin's status: America's Only Unwanted, Unhonored Coin. Originally intended as a competitive coin for the Mexican 8-reales and also as an additional outlet for Comstock silver, the coin's questionable legal status coupled with declining silver prices in the mid to late 1870s resulted in a tarnished image for the Trade dollar. But in the century since, it has become one of the most widely respected and collectible coins in all of American numismatics.
Production of business strike Trade dollars ceased in 1878, but proofs continued to be available on an individual basis from the mint for $1.25. Most of the known 1884 Trade dollars surfaced in 1908 and most originated with William Idler. It has been assumed for most of the intervening decades that they (and the 1885s) were a "nighttime operation;" that is, rarities that were clandestinely produced after hours using hubs and punches available in the die cutter's workroom. However, in June, 1988 Carl Carlson of Stack's revealed in the Sprinkle catalog new information he had gleaned from A.W. Stroub's Die Record Book. Carlson's write-up is in-depth and convincing, and we refer anyone interested in this lot to refer to his article on page 26 of the Sprinkle catalog. The upshot of his research is that the 1884 Trade dollars were, in fact, proper coins that were properly struck under proper authority. Even though this information was published eight years ago, we are sure it will still come as a surprise to many. The effect of such information is that it adds legitimacy to this issue, a date that has lived under a clandestine cloud for nearly a century.
