1915-S $2 1/2 Panama-Pacific Quarter Eagle MS67 PCGS. This Superb Gem beauty is tied for the finest ever certified by either PCGS or NGC. It is a remarkable example with fully brilliant and highly lustrous yellow-gold surfaces. Both sides are sharply detailed, with numerous fine die polishing lines imparting a splendid satiny appearance. The total mintage of this issue was originally 10,000 coins, but only 6,749 coins were actually sold at the issue price of $4 each, and the balance were later melted for recoinage. Who knows, maybe the gold was used to produce the 1916 or 1917 McKinley gold dollars. Population: 16 in 67, 0 finer (8/06). (PCGS# 7450)

1915-S $2 1/2 Panama-Pacific Quarter Eagle MS67 PCGS. Ex: Swiss America/Dr. Merritt. Few U.S. coins can compare in beauty to the Panama-Pacific quarter eagle. The allegorical figure of Minerva riding a hippocampus is unrivaled in classical symbolism in the coinage of this country. The reverse featuring the defiant eagle is taken from a pattern from the 1870s. Several commemorative denominations were issued for the Panama-Pacific Exposition. 10,000 quarter eagles were minted in June of 1915, and offered at the Exposition for $4 each. Only 6,749 pieces were sold, with the remainder being returned to the Mint for melting.

This Superb Gem is satiny and well struck, with rich orange-gold coloration and mint-green border accents. A tiny lintmark (as struck) is observed just above and behind the head of the hippocampus, but post-striking marks are conspicuously absent on both sides. As usual, wispy semi-circular die polish marks are noted in the obverse and reverse fields. Population: 14 in 67, 0 finer (4/06). (PCGS# 7450)

1915-S $2 1/2 Panama-Pacific Quarter Eagle MS67 NGC. An impeccable satin-surfaced Gem with bountiful luster and tinges of olive patina at the margin. Surface marks are virtually non-existent. Clearly one of the nicer Pan-Pac Quarter Eagles we have ever offered. The 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition belatedly celebrated the inauguration of the Panama Canal. Several Commemorative denominations were issued for the Exposition. 10,000 Quarter Eagles were minted in June of 1915, with an additional 17 reserved for assay. They were offered at the Exposition for $4 each. Only 6,749 pieces were sold, with the remainder being returned to the mint for melting. Census: 84 in 67, 0 finer (11/05).

1915-S Panama-Pacific Quarter Eagle MS67 NGC. A magnificent example of this scarce commemorative gold coin, from a net mintage of 6,749, after 10,000 were produced and 3,251 were melted as unsold. Designed by Charles Barber and George Morgan. The mostly green-gold surfaces also display lovely accents of peach-rose, especially near the borders. Close examination shows myriad die polishing lines on each side, but post-striking defects are limited to a couple of wispy marks on the neck of the hippocampus. Superior overall quality.

Although this issue is common in Mint State and can be located with relative ease in grades as high as MS 66, at the Superb Gem level this piece becomes a condition rarity. The surfaces of this matte-like example are virtually flawless, and even close examination under magnification fails to reveal any significant defects. Well struck, this lovely example will be the object of spirited bidding when it crosses the auction block. Population: 16 in 67, none finer (3/01).
