1849 No-L MS 68 NGC. Ex: Dawson. An impeccably preserved example of this low mintage issue. Mint records indicate that only 1,000 examples of the new gold dollar denomination were struck initially, without the L on the truncation. Although saved in sufficient quantities, these coins have never received the respect they obviously deserve as type pieces. The surfaces of this coin are needle sharp and nothing short of pristine, being essentially as struck under a delicate orange patina. Only one or two gold dollars of any date come to mind that would rival the quality of this outstanding first year issue. Population: 1 in 68, none finer (7/98). (PCGS# 7501)

1849 G$1 No L MS66 NGC. This pinpoint-sharp and fully lustrous canary-gold Premium Gem is gorgeously unabraded. The eye appeal is outstanding. Longacre's initial can be difficult to find on Open Wreath, Small Head gold dollars. However, since the No L subtype is represented by just one obverse die, confirmation is achieved by finding bold repunching on stars 1, 10, and 13. (The stars were entered by hand into the working die for the Small Head subtype.) Census: 9 in 66, 5 finer (7/06). (PCGS# 7501)

1849 G$1 No L MS66 PCGS. This is a remarkably, sharply struck example of the Small Head design of 1849 gold dollars, the first gold dollar variety struck in May of that year. The debut design, without Longacre's initial on the obverse, is highly elusive. Walter Breen recorded in his Complete Encyclopedia that only 1,000 of these pieces were struck on May 8. This Premium Gem specimen is nearly the finest certified. It has rich honey-gold luster with amazing eye appeal. The upper portion of the reverse die is shattered, suggesting that this was one of the final examples of this variety produced. Population: 6 in 66, 2 finer (1/07). (PCGS# 7501)

The surfaces are very bright with splendid mint frost, and most of the devices are fully struck (only a few obverse stars are not). 1849 G$1 No L MS64 ANACS. Small Head, Open Wreath. A well struck and fully lustrous peach-gold example of this famous variety. Only one obverse die is known without the L initial on the truncation, and it is the first (and scarcest) subtype of this interesting date. The other three 1849 subtypes include the Small Head, With L, Open Wreath; Large Head, Open Wreath; and Closed Wreath. Housed in an ANA cache holder.

1849 G$1 No L MS65 PCGS. This issue is reportedly the first Gold Dollar produced at the Philadelphia Mint. Just 1,000 examples of the No L variety were delivered on May 8, 1849. Although a decent number of these coins were saved as first-year souvenirs, the importance of this variety among type collectors ensures the continued popularity of high quality representatives. The lustrous, original Gem offered here displays orange-gold color that deepens slightly toward the peripheries and has pinpoint sharpness on the highpoints. (PCGS# 7501)
