1882 $5 PR65 PCGS. Production of proof Half Eagles was limited to a mere 48 pieces in 1882 and, based on certification figures, one has to doubt whether even half of that figure survives today. It has been over five years since our last offering of an 1882 Five Dollar, that being a PR63 in our 1996 ANA Sale, a coin that is vastly inferior to the specimen offered here.
This remarkable 1882 Half Eagle displays rich golden color and glassy, mirrored reflectivity in the fields that is dramatically offset by frosted devices. Close scrutiny is required to locate even the most insignificant blemish in the fields. When the combination of extreme rarity, limitless popularity, and enormous eye appeal is considered, the potential for a runaway price on this glittering, Gem quality proof Five Dollar seems to be a distinct possibility.
