1894 $5 PR64 PCGS. Only 75 proofs were struck of the 1894 Half Eagle, and survivors are even rarer than this low mintage suggests with perhaps half that number extant today. This piece, unlike the PR64 in our 1994 ANA Bullet Sale, has a generous overlay of mint frost on the devices, which creates a light but noticeable cameo contrast against the deeply mirrored fields. The orange-peel surfaces are very pleasing but close examination reveals minor planchet flaking by star 4 and above the eagle's beak. Population: 11 in 64, 2 finer (5/02). (PCGS# 8489)
