1863 G$1 PR67 Cameo NGC. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, in their book entitled Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, 1795-1933, estimate that less than one-half of the reported mintage of 50 coins is still known. The major grading services have certified about 25 pieces, but this certainly includes some resubmissions. This gorgeous PR67 Cameo, the finest seen by either NGC or PCGS, exhibits great contrast, that takes on a gold-on-black appearance when it is viewed from directly overhead. Orange-gold surfaces display crisply struck motifs, and are devoid of significant marks. Census: 1 in 67 Cameo, 0 finer (11/06). (PCGS# 87613)

1863 G$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. Minted during the height of the Civil War, only 6,200 business strikes were produced along with a paltry 50 proofs. It is believed that fewer than 15 proofs are extant today in all grades, this undoubtedly being one of the finest known. The fields are black mirrors of unfathomable reflectivity and the devices are heavily frosted, which yields a strong cameo contrast on each side. There are no obvious flaws on either side of this magnificent coin, just shimmering brilliance and thick mint luster. (PCGS# 87613)
