1869 G$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. Perhaps it is because it is a tiny Gold Dollar, or maybe it is because it is too rare. Either way, we find it difficult to comprehend that the proof 1869 does not receive the recognition it deserves as a significant numismatic rarity. A mere 25 specimens were produced, a figure that seems even smaller when one checks the business strike mintage of this P-mint delivery: only 5,900 pieces. No more than 15 examples of the proof variant are believed extant, and the present example is only the second Cameo specimen that we have handled. (The other is the PR65 Cameo PCGS representative that appeared as lot 3634 in our July 2002 New York Signature Sale.) The field-to-device contrast is marked on the reverse, but it is also appreciable on the obverse. There is not a single mentionable disturbance on either side of this sharp, golden-rose survivor. We do, however, note some as struck die polish lines in the fields. A coin with no equals at either of the major grading services. Combined NGC and PCGS Population: 1 in 66 Cameo, none are finer (11/02). (PCGS# 87619)

1869 G$1 PR65 Cameo PCGS. This is an important date in the Gold Dollar series in both business strike and proof formats. Examples of the latter delivery were produced to the extent of just 5,900 pieces, while the specimen strikings have a recorded mintage of only 25 coins. A splendid survivor of the latter delivery (of which only 14 or 15 pieces are believed extant), this glowing Gem displays lovely golden-rose color. The cameo contrast is most marked on the reverse, but it is also appreciable on the obverse. There are no singularly mentionable blemishes, as befits the grade, and the strike is razor sharp throughout. The only proof 1869 Gold Dollar with a Cameo designation at PCGS (1/03). (PCGS# 87619)
