| Lot 7580 » Gold Dollars
1875 G$1 PR66 Cameo NGC.
The otherwise yellow-gold surfaces exhibit rich orange-gold accents in the center of the obverse. There is strong cameo contrast on both sides, the devices being sharply struck and thickly frosted, while the fields reveal near-bottomless reflectivity. There are no mentionable hairlines or contact marks, and we can find no planchet flaws or any other Mint-made features that would help identify this coin for pedigree purposes. Simply put, this is a smooth, no-questions Gem.
The Philadelphia Mint produced only 20 1875 Gold Dollars in proof format. No more than half this original mintage is believed extant, including those coins that are impounded in the Smithsonian and ANS collections. Clearly, the present PR66 Cameo specimen is one of, if not
the
finest example available to private collectors.
From the Genaitis Collection of 1875 Coinage.
