| Lot 7392 » Eagles » Liberty Eagles
1867 $10 PR 65 Cameo NGC.
Ex: Trompeter. The 1867 proof eagle is an extremely rare issue of a mere 50 pieces that likely saw at least half of that figure melted at year's end. No more than a dozen coins are believed to be extant today.
The devices of this outstanding and obviously elusive specimen have bright golden frost which contrasts sharply against the limitless depth of reflectivity seen in the fields. An even, natural reddish-golden color blends harmoniously with the unspotted surfaces and sparkling reflective qualities to produce a coin that is at or near the pinnacle of preservation for the date and far better than most proofs seen from this decade. The coin is identifiable by a tiny planchet flake in the field between and to the right of stars 2 and 3, a mark (possibly Mint-made) on Liberty's temple, and another tiny planchet flaw above the T in TEN on the lower reverse.
The absolute rarity of this coin should compel collectors to figure their bids generously as the opportunity to buy such unique quality in a proof gold issue is seldom offered.
Ex: Johns Hopkins; Garrett Collection (Stack's, 3/76), lot 417; Essex Numismatic Properties; photoed in Breen's 1977 proof encyclopedia, page 135.
