1891 $10 PR 65 PCGS. Ex: Bass. Equally as rare as the 1889, the 1891 proof eagle exists to the extent of perhaps 15 coins today. It seems logical that many of the 48 proofs produced this year remained unsold at year's end and were subsequently melted. This is a simply stunning example with pronounced cameo contrast. Richly frosted, the devices are fully struck over every feature. The fields are deeply mirrored and both sides display even orange-gold coloration. As a die characteristic, we note that the curls at the back of Liberty's neck have been weakened considerably by die polishing. A small grease stain (as struck) over the lowest arrowhead on the reverse is the most useful pedigree marker.

1891 $10 PR64 PCGS. The 1891 is on an equal footing with the 1889. It is also the rarest denomination of the year. Only 15 pieces are believed extant today out of the 48 proofs that were struck. The fields are deeply mirrored with the orange-peel effect that is often seen on gold proofs from the 1880s and 1890s. The devices are lightly frosted with some cameo effect on each side, but probably not quite enough to warrant a cameo designation on the insert. A few light alloy spots are seen in the lower obverse field between Liberty's neck and stars 1 and 2. Just the slightest haze is seen on the obverse.

1891 PR 64 Cameo NGC. Ex: Trompeter. Heavy mint frost on the devices creates a lovely two-toned contrast against the unfathomably deep mirrors in the fields. Upon close scrutiny, the fields show a few wispy hairlines and there is a tiny scratch from the second 1 in the date behind the bust to Liberty's lower hair curl. Medium golden-orange color covers both sides. Overall, this is an impressive, high grade example of this very scarce issue. Only 48 proofs of this date were struck, with survivors estimated in the range of 15 pieces by both Akers and Breen. We feel the count of 27 certifications by both services is a misleading figure, as many are likely resubmissions, particularly on the PCGS side. Current NGC population (11/98): 1 in PR 64, 2 finer.

1891 PR 64 Cameo NGC. Lovely two-toned surfaces that, only upon close scrutiny, reveal a few wispy hairlines in the obverse field. Light golden-orange patina graces both sides and intensifies slightly at the borders. Only 48 proofs of this date were struck for collectors, with survivors estimated at 15-18 pieces. This glittering specimen is the first 1891 proof eagle we have been privileged to offer in several years. Population: 3 in 64, 2 higher.
