1898 $5 PR65 Cameo NGC. 75 proof Half Eagles were struck in 1898, and the number of unimpaired survivors is difficult to determine today. Third party populations are inflated by resubmissions. Breen (1988) stated, "Possibly 25 proofs survive." Earlier, in his 1977 Proof Encyclopedia, he noted, "Very rare and seldom offered; a sleeping golden elephant." This intricately struck Gem displays obvious contrast between the glowing golden devices and the mirrored fields. Hairlines are virtually absent, and the eye appeal is remarkable. Certain to be a cornerstone of a proof gold type collection. Population: 3 in 65 Cameo, 5 finer (9/05).

1898 $5 PR63 Cameo NGC. Numerous high grade proof survivors exist from this year. The present example offers lustrous canary-yellow surfaces accented by a touch of amber at the rims. Although the initial impression and good cameo contrast suggest a finer grade, a few hairlines in the fields and some small contact marks appear under a lens. Census: 3 in 63 Cameo, 14 finer (12/06).

1898 $5 PR61 Cameo NGC. The fragile mirrored fields exhibit a touch of mishandling in the more exposed areas of the fields, perhaps having been stored with other coins and allowing contact with them. A mere 75 proofs were originally produced so the rarity of this fully reflective Half Eagle is indisputable.
