1863 $10 PR64 Cameo NGC. A regal coin which is graced by strong contrast between the mirror fields and devices. The color is bright coppery-gold throughout. As expected for the grade, the surfaces are very attractive with minimal hairlines and virtually no signs of handling. The only identifying lintmark we could find is a tiny one right of the Y in LIBERTY near the edge of the coronet, and we also note a trivial speck tucked between the upper inside points of the third star. NGC has graded five coins as such of this date, with none finer in the Cameo category, and another eight pieces equal or higher in their Ultra Cameo designation. This lovely Proof eagle would make a welcome addition to any collection, and such magnificent beauty will never go out of style.
There are minute but interesting die diagnostics on this issue, we note a few small raised lumps from die rust on Liberty's truncation, another one near her earlobe on her jaw. In addition, a small lintmark somehow adhered to the hub when the die was engraved, right on Liberty's cheek below her eye, the coiner noted this raised line on the die atop Liberty's cheek on the die, and carefully wire brushed most of it off her cheek, but telltale faint swirling lines are seen on her cheek and portions of the hubbed lintmark are still present on the Proofs coined from this die. On the reverse we note the last vertical shield line extends up to the third horizontal stripe. These tiny diagnostics are unique to the obverse and reverse die, and would appear on each coin struck from these dies unless the dies were further lapped or altered by the Mint employees.
