| Lot 6260 » Double Eagles » Liberty Double Eagles
1862 PR 64 NGC.
It is unusual to have one No Motto double eagle in proof in a sale, but to have two in one sale is absolutely amazing. This lovely piece has superior cameo contrast with bottomless, deeply mirrored surfaces and rich orange toning. There are a few small marks visible in the obverse fields, but the reverse is virtually flawless. All of the proof No Motto double eagles are extremely rare, and Breen states of the 1862, "Possibly 12-15 proofs known, some impaired." Akers comments, "I estimate that 12-13 proofs still exist out of the original 35 mintage." We concur with their estimates as nine pieces have been certified by NGC and PCGS, although we would expect that at least one has been submitted more than once. Of the nine certified coins, only one piece has graded higher than this coin, a PR 65 certified by NGC. Population: 2 in 64, 1 finer.
