PCGS 1872 Washington Head Octagonal Quarter Dollar MS 63. BG-722, R.4. Large Washington head in a circle of well-formed stars. No berries in wreath, the entire reverse is spanned by a fine, almost microscopic die crack. Struck by Frontier & Bellemere. Not listed in Baker's original catalog of Washington coins and medals; listed in updated version as Baker 504B, R-8. A small surface irregularity is noted to the left of the fraction, apparently where some foreign matter adhered to the die and was struck through. This is a perennially popular Cal Gold type. PCGS 1876 Indian Head Round Quarter Eagle MS 64. BG-852, R.6. The final pair of feathers droop on the California Jewelry Co. design. Three berries are visible on each half of the wreath on the reverse. Ex. T.J. Clark. A pale, green-gold example with bright, prooflike surfaces. Population: 5 in MS-64, none higher, making this one of the finest graded thus far. (PCGS# 10713)

PCGS 1851 Ring Cent, Judd-129 Original, R.7, PR 64 Brown. This Ring cent pattern shows an obverse with a wreath around the perforated center and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. The reverse reads simply CENT/ ONE TENTH SILVER around a circle that surrounds the perforation. Struck in billon with a plain edge. Most of the surfaces are a deep brown and blue with lighter mellowed orange-red scattered about. A rare and desirable early pattern cent struck in a reduced size and in an experimental alloy. We know of only two appearances of this pattern in recent decades, the Crouch coin (Superior, 1977) that was silver plated, and the Harte piece from B&M's 1983 sale. (PCGS# 11550)

PCGS 1856 Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-184, R.8, PR 63. A fascinating combination of Longacre's adaptation of Gobrecht's flying eagle design on the obverse with a broad shield over an oak wreath on the reverse. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. While rated R.8 by Judd this pattern is most likely an R.6 and is to be reclassified as such in the new pattern reference when released later this year. A pleasing coin for the grade with even brown color over both sides and just a hint of underlying red. There are a couple of tiny planchet flakes on the obverse between the eagle's wing and the second T in STATES that serve as identifying marks. (PCGS# 11808)

PCGS 1858 Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-191, R.5, PR 64. A transitional pattern that combines the regular dies Small Letters obverse from 1858 with the laurel wreath reverse of 1859. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. The moderately reflective fields show a light speckling of multicolored iridescence over the predominantly reddish-tan surfaces. (PCGS# 11840)

PCGS 1858 Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-193, R.5, PR 65. Regular dies obverse with a reverse that has an oak wreath with a broad, ornamented shield at the top. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. A transitional pattern for the replacement of the Wreath of Cereals originally used on Longacre's three-dollar gold reverse. Nicely reflective fields with a needle-sharp strike and warm golden color with underlying rose accents. (PCGS# 11844)

PCGS 1858 Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-203, R.5, PR 65. Flying Eagle pattern differing from the Gobrecht inspired eagle of the adopted design. Attributed to Longacre, but close examination of the lettering suggest that Anthony Paquet may have also been involved. The reverse has the Longacre oak wreath with laurel branch and arrows, another unaborted design. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. Needle sharp strike with even gold toning. Distinctly superior to the Stack's William Moore Brilliant Proof that brought $2,000 in March 1992. (PCGS# 11869)

PCGS 1858 Indian Cent, Judd-211, R.5, PR 64. The Indian cent design as adopted the following year with rounded bust point and no L as on the 1859-64 cents. The reverse has an oak wreath with arrows in its base. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. Light tan color with some peripheral iridescence and one copper spot at the top of the U in UNITED. Superior to the 211 in Stack's William Moore Sale which realized $2,300. (PCGS# 11893)

PCGS 1885-S MS 64. A wonderfully bright and lustrous '85-S dollar. The surfaces are devoid of any meaningful abrasions, the only mentionable marks are a couple of long, thin, and very shallow scratches on the lower cheek that are only noticeable when the coin is angled just so. A bit soft in the centers, but this is counterbalanced by the lovely mint frost and unusually clean surfaces of the coin. (PCGS# 7164)

PCGS 1885-S MS 65. Splashes of red-gold color highlight Liberty's cap and hair. This piece is nicely struck and shows a strong hair curl above Liberty's ear. A few light marks, all of which are consistent with the grade, are noted on either side. Like most Morgan Dollars today, this date has a big spread between the widely reported sight-unseen bids and the more elusive sight-seen bids. (PCGS# 7164)

PCGS 1885-S MS 66. The numerous 1885-S dollars in the extensive Redfield hoard did not materially increase the number of high grade (65 and better) examples of this date. Because of the storage conditions and the careless handling of the Redfield coins, the vast majority of '85-S dollars are MS 63 or less. In MS 66 it is a significant coin. This is a sharply struck piece that does not show the counting mark common to Redfield dollars and there are only the slightest marks on each side. Beautifully toned in shades of golden and rose with strong luster beneath. Population: 8 in 66, 1 finer. (PCGS# 7164)
