1839 AU 55 Reverse Cleaned. Judd-104, Pollock-116. Die Alignment IV. Head of Liberty opposite OF on the reverse. 409.20 grains. When rotated on a vertical axis, the eagle flies horizontally--the definition of Die Alignment IV. The vast majority of known 1839 Gobrechts examined by researchers today have proved to be from this die pairing. However, this coin is struck from the rare, uncracked reverse die, lacking the usual crack seen through MER of AMERICA. Some researchers believe this die state to be from the 1858-60 period of restrikings. However, the most recent scholarship in this area indicates that the Die Alignment IV coins are actually the original issue of 1839. This controversy is yet to be resolved.
Softly struck at the margins on each side, the reverse fields have been harshly cleaned, but the effects have been somewhat muted by the presence of deep violet-blue toning. Two slight rim bumps are noted on the obverse, one at 6 o'clock and the other at 8 o'clock, and there is a small spot of corrosion over star 2. (PCGS# 6915)

1787 Connecticut Cent XF 40 Light Corrosion. Horned Bust Variety. An exceptionally well struck coin that exhibits deep, even brown color over both sides and fine granularity from light corrosion. 1783 Nova Constellatio VF 20 Porous. Pointed Rays. Crosby-2-A. Well balanced steel-brown surfaces with light, uniform porosity on each side. Cataloged in more depth in Kessler-Spangenberger, where the description reads in part, "Small, narrow date with unusual 7 and 5 leaning sharply left. Unillustrated but listed in Taxay, who calls it Rare; priced in Vlack at more than double the regular type. In the 1976 ANA Sale, Stack's called the die variety tied for rarest with C.4-C. Probably only a dozen or so survivors, possibly fewer." Listed on page 34 of the 1999 Guide Book.

1788 Connecticut Cent Fine 15 Corroded. Miller 5-B.2, R.6. Small Mailed Bust Right (B-2), struck over a 1785 Nova Constellatio with Script U.S. Some of the undertype can be seen in the center of the obverse with either a punch-mark or deep planchet flaw in the exact center. The center of the reverse was scribed by someone scratching three intersecting lines into that side. Moderate evidence of corrosion. Attributed in white ink in the left obverse field, a common practice around the turn of the century. Possibly even scarcer than the R.6 designation. Described by Breen as "very rare," and Bowers indicated in their 11/89 auction that they were aware of only 10 examples. It appears that VF is the highest grade ever offered. Listed on page 42 of the 1999 Guide Book.

1833 PR 63 Red and Brown, Cleaned. Nicely reflective, the coin overall is bright from cleaning. The fields appear deep blue but close examination reveals lovely oil-slick iridescent pools of color while the devices are surrounded by cherry-red. Struck from Die State II which is characterized by a die crack from the 4th to 6th stars and another from the 7th star into the field above the head of Liberty. There are also no clash marks on this die state. D.S. II coins are only found as proofs. (PCGS# 1199)

The surfaces are an even chocolate-brown, show considerable iridescence, and are extremely clean on the obverse, while the reverse shows a few contact marks under magnification. Overall, an exceptional Wreath cent and a prize for the type collector. (PCGS# 1347)

1794 Fine 12. S-67, R.3. Dr. Maris' Roman Plicae variety, so called because the relief is almost flat, the hair is braided into five heavy, coarse locks--there is little evidence (on higher graded examples) of fine engraving, and the features suggest no expression other than a grim stare. This is a well centered piece that has light to medium brown color with a tinge of olive. Two planchet voids are noted in the center of the reverse. (PCGS# 1365)
