1795 VG 10 PCGS. O-104, R.4. Liberty's lowest curl is closed and near touches star 1 at two points, and there is a tiny die lump under star 15. A wholesome, well balanced example that is medium to light gray overall with burnt-gold and forest-green toning about the stars, date, and lettering on the obverse. The reverse is framed in similar, but less obvious shades. (PCGS# 6052)

1807 Draped Bust MS 63 NGC. O-102, R.2. A very pleasing and unquestionably original Draped Bust half. Deep mauve and steel-gray patina covers each side with faint indications of underlying iridescence and tiny portions of original brilliance surrounding the devices. A bit weakly impressed, as one might expect for such an early screw press product. There are no large or distracting blemishes on either side, the grade being derived from the depth of toning which subdues the underlying luster, rather than any large or severe abrasions. 1810 MS 65 NGC. O-107a, R.4. Very well, indeed sharply struck in all areas, with outstanding cartwheel luster. The obverse is beautifully toned in pale shades of magenta and lime-green while richer hues of aqua and steel-violet form a somewhat concentric pattern on the reverse. Mint State 1810 halves of this die variety show up on occasion, but the appearance of a gem O-107 places it at the top of Condition Census rankings. Population: 2 in 65, none finer (3/99). The obverse is draped in golden-violet toning with highlights of turquoise and rose iridescence. A slightly deeper steel-violet coloration is teamed with blue and yellow-gold accents on the reverse. The low mintage 1815 half dollar is the sentimental key to the Capped Bust series, having been struck from only a single pair of dies and being reasonably scarce at all grade levels. 1815/2 AU 58 PCGS. O-101a, R.3. A borderline Uncirculated specimen that represents a later die state for this well known key Capped Bust issue. The surfaces are virtually untoned and evidence of circulation is extremely minimal, making it easy to locate the numerous clash marks in both the obverse and reverse fields, as well as within the eagle's shield. Faint die cracks can also be seen outlining the reverse. The scarcity of the 1815 half in lower grades is certainly no match for its popularity, but pieces in Choice AU and Uncirculated grades are legitimately elusive. Population: 7 in 58, 6 finer (3/99). 1836 MS 62 PCGS. The 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar is an important transitional year issue, not only because it meant a design change for the largest circulating silver coin at the time, but also because it marked an updated change in the Mint's technology to the new steam press. Just 1,200 pieces were reportedly struck and it appears that, not only did most enter circulation, they stayed in commercial channels for decades before their rarity and significance was documented. The example offered here is one of just 20 to 30 pieces known to survive at the Mint State level. Each side is boldly detailed, including the peripheral areas, and displays a mildly reflective sheen under mottled gray-violet, golden, and sea-green toning. Population: 5 in 62, 3 finer (3/99).
