1805 $2 1/2 AU 55 Mount Removed, Cleaned. The unnaturally bright, green-gold surfaces display scattered abrasions and hairlines. The reverse also exhibits a rough texture that attests to the fact that this was probably used as a jewelry piece at one time. A few of the reverse devices have been re-engraved in the areas where the mount was attached. Still, the 1805 quarter eagle is a low mintage (1,781 pieces) issue that suffered from heavy circulation and widespread melting. (PCGS# 7653)

1652 Pine Tree Shilling VF 30. Small Planchet. Breen-53, Noe-16. 56.3 grains. The planchet is somewhat clipped with the outer ring of denticles incomplete but the letters only minimally affected. This is a later die state showing a die break among the branches on the left side of the pine tree. Medium silver-gray surfaces with lighter highlights. Overall, this is an attractive example of this historic and desirable coinage. The pine tree pieces were struck from 1667-1682 but were backdated to the date of the first Massachusetts coinage. This is one of the issues that regularly shows up on the want lists of non-collectors. Listed on page 18 of the 2001 Guide Book. (PCGS# 24)

1652 Pine Tree Threepence VF 30. Noe-36. 16.3 grains. Struck on a beautiful, full planchet with complete legends, only showing a little weakness at SAT in MASATHVSETS and the D on the corresponding area on the other side. The surfaces have an attractive, light silver-gray appearance with the most noticeable flaw being an old scratch on the lower right side of the tree and another at the E of MASATHVSETS. Listed on page 18 of the 2001 Guide Book. (PCGS# 21)

1785 Connecticut Copper VF 30 Corroded. M-4.3-A.2, R.3. 131.5 grains. There are patches of black corrosion as well as some pitting on each side. The strike is uneven, resulting in little detail showing across the center of the reverse and in the area of the hair on the obverse. Other details, especially much of the legend, are quite strong. ET LIB shows bold die breaks connecting the letters. Listed on page 40 of the 2001 Guide Book. (PCGS# 316)

1786 Vermont VF 35 Old Scratches. VERMONTENSIUM. Ryder-7, R.3. 105.5 grains. Deep, old scratches are present on the obverse, but this piece has significantly fewer planchet flaws than usually seen on this variety. The strike is also much more even than usual, and the legends are also uncommonly well defined. What little weakness there is affects the plow and some rays on the reverse. The surfaces are generally smooth and attractive with only trivial bits of corrosion. Accompanied by a certificate and photo from the Colonial American Coin Club and signed by Don Taxay. This "club" was a service of First Coinvestors, which was associated with Pine Tree Auction Company in the mid-1970s. Listed on page 51 of the 2001 Guide Book. (PCGS# 545)

The fields are mostly dark brown in color, while the higher devices are a smooth dark tan. There is a small dig in the obverse field between Liberty's head and cap, and a few thin scratches on the reverse. Struck on a small 7/8" flan. An affordable and acceptable example of this popular and historic issue. (PCGS# 1000)

1794 1/2 C Fine 15 Reverse Corroded. B-9, C-9, R.2. The obverse of this piece is quite pleasing, indeed choice for the grade, with smooth chocolate-brown surfaces and a few minor abrasions. The reverse is a lighter tan color, with microscopic pitting in areas and a few dents and depressions, including a noticeable one beneath the T in UNITED, on the surface of the coin. A few small rim bruises and one minor rim cut at 9 o'clock are also noted on the reverse. This example is from a late die state, with a crack that extends from the obverse rim through the cap to the hair, and another through the tops of the letters in LIBERTY. The reverse has a rim break (cud) that covers several denticles to the left of the 2 in the fraction. (PCGS# 1003)

1794 1/2 C VF 30 Corroded, Rim Damaged. B-1a, C-1a, R.3. The surfaces of this dark chocolate-brown half cent are microscopically corroded, leaving a granular appearance throughout. The devices are quite smooth, however, and pleasant appearing.. There are several bumps and bruises on the rims on each side, and three reverse digs, one quite large above the A in HALF. While this piece is by no means choice for the grade, it does have bountiful remaining detail and is an acceptable example of the issue. (PCGS# 1003)

The surfaces are above average, with scattered light abrasions as can be expected for the grade. A couple of tiny rim bruises are evident, but these are mentioned more for accuracy than as flaws. This piece presents a great opportunity to purchase a nice looking 18th century half cent for less than a problem-free piece might bring. (PCGS# 1018)

1795 1/2 C Plain Edge Fine 12. B-6a, C-6a, R.3. A beautiful early half cent with smooth dark tan surfaces and even wear. One small 2 mm triangular planchet void, apparently as made, is visible on the reverse rim above the first A in AMERICA. This is the only flaw in the coin, however, as the surfaces are smooth and glossy with fewer abrasions than expected for the grade. The reverse shows two large, parallel die cracks--almost joining and appearing like one large crack--that create a "shelf" on the coin, making the denomination in the center difficult to read because of inadequate striking pressure. A very attractive, choice piece that is sure to excite the serious copper collector. (PCGS# 1018)

1797 1/2 C 1 Above 1 Fine 15. B-1, C-1, R.2. A nice example of this popular variety with a widely misplaced digit in the date. The smooth surfaces are deep chocolate-brown in color, with areas of microscopic roughness visible under magnification. The coin was struck slightly off center to the southwest (relative to the obverse). There are numerous die cracks and bulges, characteristic of Manley's Die State 5.0 (Breen State IX), which he describes as very scarce. This is an above average example with pleasing surfaces and should be of great interest to half cent specialists. (PCGS# 1042)

1797 1/2 C Plain Edge VG 10 Corroded. B-3c, C-3a, R.3. A pleasing example of the popular "Low Head" variety, dark brown in color and with somewhat lighter tan devices. The surfaces are mildly corroded, and there are several small pinscratches on the obverse. While not a choice example, the piece is well centered and has some eye appeal. It was struck on a planchet cut down from a spoiled large cent, as the denticles and the letters AMER from the large cent are visible on the reverse. (PCGS# 1036)
