1858 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-193, Pollock-236, R.5, PR 65 PCGS. The obverse is identical to the regular issue 1858 Small Letters cent. The reverse, while similar to that adopted for the Indian cent in 1860, displays a broad, ornamented shield at the top. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. Both sides are smooth and moderately reflective beneath mottled milky iridescence. Orange-tan in color with ample eye appeal. (PCGS# 11844)

One of the more popular English Conder tokens with an American connection, presumably because of both the high quality engraving and the fact that they are believed to have circulated here. 1795 Talbot, Allum & Lee Cent MS 62 Brown PCGS. Attractive brown patina is present in varying tones. There is a light scratch in the obverse field, and the reverse surfaces are choice. The die state is a little bit later than on the following piece. This is the earliest American token that one can find with any regularity in high grades. Talbot, Allum, & Lee, merchants in New York, had these historic tokens made for them in England when the fledgling U.S. Mint was unable to supply the demand for circulating copper. Listed on page 56 of the 2000 Guide Book. (PCGS# 640)

1795 Talbot, Allum & Lee Cent MS 64 Brown PCGS. Breen-1035/1036. Wonderful strong strike. The surfaces are an attractive light brown with tiny bits of black corrosion on some of the obverse devices. This issue is also of interest to half cent collectors because the U.S. mint purchased a half ton of these in 1795 and cut them down to use as half cent planchets. 1795 North Wales Halfpenny VF 30 PCGS. Plain Edge. 84.4 grains. Baker-34, Breen-1295. Near the light end of the range of weights seen. Attractive medium brown patina with some darker highpoints, the color is not brassy as sometimes seen. Both surfaces have microscopic scratches, but these do not detract from the coin's overall appearance. Struck from very shallow dies, even the finest specimens give a first impression of being well worn. The weakness at the lower left of the harp is a feature of the die, not the result of weak strike. The obverse also has the usually seen die break under GEORGEIUS. This is the only specimen graded by PCGS. The reverse die was used in conjunction with other dies at Lutwyche's Birmingham mint to create evasion halfpennies. The Washington obverse, however, is only seen in this combination. This item is in demand by Washington collectors as well as by collectors of Conder tokens or evasion halfpennies. Listed on page 62 of the 2000 Guide Book. (PCGS# 770)

In addition to an enticing mintage figure of only 35,344 pieces, the 1793 is the only Liberty Cap half cent with Liberty's head facing left. Understandably popular among type collectors, the present example offers nearly VF 35 detail for a fraction of the cost. Blushes of crimson patina are noted on both sides, but the dark coloration and rough surfaces are noticeable at all angles. Still, with readily appreciable devices, this coin would do justice to a budget-minded collection. (PCGS# 1000)

The coin is free of all but the smallest of abrasions, and has great eye appeal. This die variety is the result of a die injury, caused by the obverse die striking a bolt, the imprint of which can be seen to the right of Liberty's portrait. (PCGS# 1075)

One of three different large cent types employed in 1793 and a perennially popular issue among copper specialists and type collectors alike. The surfaces display rich chocolate-brown patina and no more than the expected number of small abrasions for the grade. The central reverse is somewhat softly defined, but the balance of the features have held up well despite 40 points of wear. Worthy of a strong bid.

1801 1C Three Errors VF 35 PCGS. S-219, R.2. A beautiful, choice early large cent that reaches into the lower echelon of the Condition Census for the variety. The reverse of this issue is a comedy of errors. The U in UNITED is actually two Is punched side-by-side, and the left stem of the wreath is missing. The fraction at the bottom reads a mathematically meaningless 1/000. Perhaps the die sinker had his mind on other things and wasn't paying attention to his work. Perhaps he didn't get enough sleep the night before. Or perhaps he had spent the night before partying into the wee hours of the morning (although early 19th century Philadelphia does not conjure up images of revelry in anyone's mind). In any case, his blunder created a variety that is instantly recognized and always popular, and has long been treasured by successive generations of collectors. The reverse shows two heavy die cracks, as usual, along the bottom left. There is some incusation or die damage visible at the base of the wreath as well. Medium brown toning covers the smooth surfaces on the upper left two-thirds of the obverse and the corresponding lower left two-thirds of the reverse. An arc of lighter brownish-tan color takes up the remaining third of the coin. A few circulation marks are visible, but fewer than are normally seen at this grade level. This piece certainly classifies as choice for the grade, and would be a highlight of any collection of early copper. (PCGS# 1461)
