1894 1C Doubled Date MS 65 Red PCGS. Snow-1. Writing in 1992, Snow (Flying Eagle and Indian Cents) states that the 1894 Doubled Die cent is "scarce in low grades, rare to very rare in mint state." Current PCGS and NGC population reports confirm Snow's statement, and the present example is one of only seven MS 65 Red examples known to these grading services. Incredibly, almost implausibly, NGC reports a single MS 66 Red example finer (3/01). This Gem is one of the finest 1894 Doubled Die cents available to today's specialists. Both sides are awash in reddish-orange luster that possesses a thick, frosty texture. The strike is not full, but the feather tips on the obverse are uncommonly bold for this often poorly defined issue. There are no distracting abrasions, a small toning spot on the obverse between the RI in AMERICA is noted as a pedigree marker.

1882 1C PR 67 Red and Brown PCGS. The proof 1882 (3,100 pieces produced) is certainly not a rare coin in an absolute sense, but precious few examples are as carefully preserved as this exquisite Superb Gem. There is a nearly continuous blanket of reddish-brown patina over both sides, through which golden tinged luster shines at certain angles. The strike is every bit as bold as one would expect for a proof striking, and the fields reveal modest, yet appreciable reflectivity. NGC and PCGS combined report only seven examples at the present grade level, with none finer (3/01).
