1916 25C AU55 NGC. Among 20th Century silver rarities, the 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter is at the top of the list for popularity. With an original mintage of only 52,000 pieces, survivors are eagerly sought at all levels of preservation. This example features a veil of thin gold toning on light silver-gray surfaces that retain a good amount of luster. The design elements are slightly better struck than is characteristic of the issue, though some of the typical softness is apparent on Liberty's head and inner shield, and in the stars on the gate. The reverse elements are stronger, as is typical. Only a few trivial abrasions and some wispy slide marks will be found on the relatively clean surfaces of this key date. (PCGS# 5704)

1875 20C AU58 NGC. The 1875 Philadelphia Mint twenty-cent piece is considerably scarcer than either of the two western mint issues of this date, although examples from Carson City are nearly as important. Although not fully struck, this example is considerably sharper than most encountered, and has lovely prooflike surfaces beneath pale gold and iridescent toning.

1875-CC 20C MS64 PCGS. The only collectible Carson City Mint twenty-cent piece, with the only other CC issue of this denomination (1876-CC) being a major rarity with only a few more than a dozen known. Therefore, the 1875-CC issue is the only candidate for the Carson City type collector. This near-Gem example has frosty silver luster with splashes of iridescent toning. Typical strike for this issue with most obverse details well defined. The reverse has considerable flatness at the top of the eagle's right wing (to the viewer's left) and on the head. It is seldom that an example is found with these areas showing any design details. Population: 95 in 64, 18 finer (3/04). (PCGS# 5297)

Of that mintage, a large number were either mishandled or melted, as the 1875 is quite scarce in high grades. Deeply mirrored, the devices are lightly frosted which gives the coin a slight but unacknowledged cameo contrast on each side. Lightly toned. Population: 58 in 64, 28 finer (3/04). (PCGS# 5303)

1796 25C --Graffiti, Cleaned, Scratched--ANACS. Fine Details, Net VG8. B-2, R.3. The Draped Bust quarter with a Small Eagle reverse is a one year type coin with a production of 6,146 pieces. This example is nearly perfectly centered, as is typically the case, and shows strong dentilation on each side. Graffiti is located in the left obverse field to the left and below the ribbon bow. Seven or eight horizontal scratches are found on Liberty's neck and bust, and eight or nine more are present in the right obverse field. Seven or eight pinscratches occur on both of the eagle's wings and the adjacent fields. The surfaces are toned a dark bluish-gray, highlighting the lighter design elements.

1804 25C Fine 12 ANACS. B-1, High R.3. With only 6,738 pieces produced, the 1804 is the first issue of the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle type, and one of the premier rarities in the early quarter series. Examples are highly sought after in all grades. This specimen reveals a silver-gray color, and nicely detailed design elements. A few minor, scattered abrasions are noted on the obverse, while the reverse is remarkably clean for the grade. The diagnostic die line characteristic of the variety shows clearly between stars 8 and 9, as does a planchet flaw.

1806 25C VF20 NGC. B-5, R.5. While considered to be Rarity-6 by Walter Breen when he updated the Browning reference, this variety is probably just Rarity-5 today. Wonderful medium gray surfaces for the grade, with lighter golden-brown devices.

1831 25C Small Letters MS64 PCGS. B-4, R.1. A slender die crack through the C in the denomination aids the identification of this exquisitely struck near-Gem. Golden-brown, lilac, and electric-blue patina embraces the attractively preserved semi-prooflike surfaces. A scarce type in Mint State, produced in much smaller quantities than the Bust Half Dollars of the era. The bottom of the holder has a small crack that has no effect on the preservation of the coin itself. Population: 42 in 64, 17 finer (3/04). (PCGS# 5348)
