1923-S 50C MS65 PCGS. A very attractive coin that sports strong luster in the fields and satiny texture throughout. The strike is fairly sharp for this date, with most of the definition present on Liberty's head, but her thumb is a little weak. One nick is located right at the base of her knee and this will serve to identify this coin. Faint obverse die cracks are seen through Liberty's head and the flag. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports show 67 pieces graded this high with an additional 18 coins seen finer.

1893-S $1 MS64 PCGS. The proof-only 1895 aside, this issue has long been recognized as the premier rarity in the Morgan Dollar series. The election of President Grover Cleveland and the financial panic caused by the hoarding of gold during this period marked a shift in government policy toward the minting of Silver Dollars. The repeal of the Sherman Act became law in the winter of 1893 and mintages were drastically reduced. Just 100,000 pieces were struck, a tiny figure by Morgan Dollar standards, and the vast majority were either extensively circulated or later melted. Today, even XF and AU examples can be very difficult and costly to locate and the occasional appearance of a Mint State piece never fails to capture a numismatic headline. There have never been any significant hoards of 1893-S Morgan Dollars located, and none were in the Treasury release of the 1960s. In The Morgan and Peace Dollar Text Book, author Wayne Miller mentioned a small hoard: "Many BU 1893-S dollars can be traced to a hoard of twenty pieces found in a BU bag of 1894-S dollars in Great Falls, Montana in the early 1950s. These dollars were dispersed over a twenty year period, one or two at a time."

This virtual Gem representative is accented in delicate golden hues and shows just a few slight blemishes on and in the vicinity of Liberty's chin. The strike is more than adequate for the issue and the luster is more satiny than cartwheel. The distinctive markers of genuine 1893-S Dollars, a tiny die chip located in the left base of R and a diagonal die line that severs the left arm of T, are clearly on display. Only a few dozen Mint State pieces are known to exist, and they are among the most prized Silver Dollars of any date and any type. Population: 4 in 64, 7 finer (11/04).

1878 8TF $1 PR66 Cameo NGC. Ex: South Beach Collection. The 1878 8TF is the premier issue of the Morgan Dollar series and an important type that is unique to this date. Despite its importance and the broad appeal of Morgan Dollars, surprisingly little respect is accorded proof strikings. They are even more challenging than their modest mintage of just 500 coins would suggest. This high grade, essentially untoned specimen, has just a touch of champagne-tan peripheral color on each side, and is most notable for the degree of contrast between the fields and devices. Wholeheartedly recommended for the Morgan Dollar enthusiast. Population: 10 in 66 Cameo, 2 finer (12/04).

1842-O $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. One of the rarest dates from the New Orleans Mint, and this one is very high grade for the issue. The strike is weak as nearly always seen with flatness on Liberty's curls around her face, and poor definition on the eagle's neck and particularly the thigh and claws. Almost impossible to find in uncirculated condition, the entire mintage of 19,800 seemed to serve for years in circulation except for a handful which are in Choice or lower mint state grades. This particular coin is identifiable by a thin arcing scratch from the eleventh star nearly to Liberty's hair bun, and by the lofty grade, which very few of this date can approach. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports note two coins graded this high with another two specimens above.

1879 $4 Coiled Hair, Judd-1638, Pollock-1838, R.6. PR67 Cameo NGC. The Morgan Design. Reeded Edge. One of the very finest known of this ever popular and elusive issue. The surfaces are very bright and reflective in the fields, while the devices are thick with frost. For the collector, the quality of the coin is always a paramount issue, and this particular specimen is simply stunning for the quality and for the excellent contrast. Examination with a 10X loupe finds little evidence of handling, and anything noted is extremely faint. There is a very thin broken scratch hidden in Liberty's hair behind her temple which runs horizontal to the right and ends above Liberty's ear. Another extremely faint line extends down the back of Liberty's head right of her ear and can only be seen at certain angles and with a strong loupe and light. The fields and balance of the obverse are essentially the quality as the day they were coined. We note a minute planchet flake in the field between the serif of the G and Liberty's mouth, and a very short lint mark in the field between her bun and the A close to the rim. Morgan might have hand cut the letters of LIBERTY in the crown, as they are awkward in appearance and we suspect no die punches would be available that would both decrease in size in a uniform fashion as well as shrink toward the right side on each letter, fitting the angular shape of Liberty's crown. This particular coin shows this feature clearly as the coin has a sharp strike and none of the striation lines seen on the other specimen in this sale from this same die pairing. Numerous minor repunchings are seen on the obverse inscription, notably the central serif of the 3, the first S, the serif of both 7s, the A and stars eleven and twelve. The reverse shows the post of the D well above the final placement, and this repunched feature is present on all Stellas, as they were struck with the same reverse die. In the Garrett Collection sale, this coin was called "the single most important coin in American numismatics." Today, its status is no different. Any coin that is unique can be considered an important coin. The importance also depends on the coin's position in the numismatic world. A Colonial American gold coin, one of two varieties intended for actual circulation, maintains a higher position in American numismatics than another coin which might be part of a long series of coinage issues. In his day, B. Max Mehl was fond of comparing certain rarities to that "King of American Coins," the 1804 dollar. Today, we have other coins that can provide a comparison. Certainly, we feel this coin is the equal of the 1804 silver dollar in terms of importance. It seems far more important than the unique 1870-S three-dollar gold piece, or the 1870-S half dime, or other unique coins. Is it as important as the 1933 double eagle? In our opinion, it is. Is it worth as much, or will it sell for as much as that coin recently sold for? We certainly hope so. In fact, we whole-heartedly agree with Dave Bowers' comments regarding the offering of this coin in the Garrett Collection. We feel that this coin is the single most important coin in American numismatics!

Various theories have attempted to explain the purpose of the various Brasher Doubloons. Don Taxay suggested that they were struck from the dies intended for copper coinage, but that the gold version were intended as bribes for the New York State legislators who would favor Brasher and Bailey with a contract for the copper coinage. Taxay's comments probably came from Robert A. Vlack, in Early American Coins: "There is every reason to believe he [Brasher] contemplated expanding his profession to that of coinage as he filed a petition on February 11, 1787, with John Bailey, for the privilege of coining copper. It is reasonable to assume then, that these original dies were cut to serve more for a copper coinage for New York, than for a gold issue. This is supported by the fact that the dies were of the same size as that for the copper state coinage."

Another theory suggested that these coins were produced as souvenirs to visitors of Washington, who lived next door. The cataloger for RARCOA, in Auction '79, stated: "The logical conclusion, then, is that the coins were minted by Brasher to be sold as souvenirs. Brasher's shop was located at 1 Cherry Street (as listed in the 1787 New York Directory), directly next door to the 'first White House' where George Washington lived from his inauguration in April 1789 until February 1790. Perhaps the single most important entry into the history of the Brasher Doubloon (specifically the Lima Style Doubloon), was published in the ANS Coinage of the Americas Conference series. "Ephraim Brasher's 1786 Lima Style Doubloon" was presented by Michael Hodder at the 1991 conference, and was published by the ANS in 1992 as part of Money of Pre-Federal America, edited by John M. Kleeberg.

Walter Breen suggested that the Lima Style Doubloons were produced after the New York Style pieces. In his Complete Encyclopedia, Breen noted: "Most likely their unfamiliar design [the New York Style Doubloons] met with resistance, so that Brasher substituted another design, imitating the then common Philip V Lima Doubloons; he hallmarked these similarly." This statement would probably still be taken as the truth except for the report of Michael Hodder who noted that the EB punch appearing on the Lima Style Doubloons is in an earlier die state, meaning they had to be struck first.

Regarding the Lima Style Doubloon, Hodder (p. 128) noted: "Another gold coin type which bears an 'EB' counterstamp has been known for nearly a century, the so-called 'Lima Style' Doubloon. Apart from a few auction catalogue descriptions of indifferent usefulness, and a report by the American Numismatic Society published in 1915, even less of value has been written about t (PCGS# 491)

1787 COPPER Nova Eborac Copper, Seated Left MS63 Brown PCGS. Breen-986. The obverse portrait faces to the right with NOVA left and EBORAC right. Three rosettes separate the legend with one preceding NOVA, another following EBORAC, and the third separating these words, to the left of the head. The reverse has the seated figure facing to the viewer's left with the date in exergue below, and the legend VIRT. ET. LIB., preceded and followed by rosettes. The abbreviated legend represents VIRTUS ET LIBERTAS, which is translated to Strength and Freedom. Little is known of the origins of the Nova Eboracs, an unauthorized part of the state coinage of New York. Breen notes that the letter punches and rosette punches match those found on the Brasher Doubloons, establishing a connection between these two issues. John Bailey, who was associated with Ephraim Brasher, is generally considered the individual who produced these pieces. See lot 30011 for additional information about the coinage proposals of Brasher and Bailey.

This is a splendid example with attractive olive-brown color and iridescent toning. The surfaces are glossy and lustrous despite microscopic roughness and traces of verdigris. Although not fully struck, there is considerable strength in details that are usually not visible, including the head of Columbia on the reverse. (PCGS# 801)

Cleaned and now bright yellow gold with lilac toning in three prominent splashes on the obverse. Some light edge problems with a later void in the planchet at 8 o'clock. Plugged and counterstamped by Ephraim Brasher, with EB in an oval at the center of the obverse. Struck at the Minas Gerais Mint. Standard for the issue was 3.58 grams of .917 fine (22K) gold. This example weighs 3.48 grams, just a tenth of a gram light. This is the first date of issue for this type with the head of John VI facing right, and it is a scarce date among coins of this type.

Types of Coins in Circulation in Colonial America

Immigrants to America brought their possessions with them, which would have included any coinage they had, from their native lands. It is this coinage that became the base for a circulating money in the colonies, and this coinage would have been roughly proportional to the number of immigrants from any given country. Eventually, the export of goods to foreign lands resulted in additional gold and silver being imported to colonial America as well. In Money of the American Colonies and Confederation, Philip L. Mossman (p. 29) notes: "While the ready availability of hard coin fluctuated because of cyclical inflationary and recessionary periods, there was a chronic shortage of small denominational currency for daily business."< (PCGS# 801)

Joseph I faces to the right, with this piece plugged and counterstamped by Ephraim Brasher, with EB in an oval over the ear of Joseph. Struck at the Bahia Mint. Light cleaned with minor abrasions. The surfaces have rich greenish-yellow color with splendid peripheral lilac and iridescent toning. Standard for this issue was 14.3234 grams of .917 fine gold. With the plug, this example weighs 11.73 grams, somewhat underweight. The edge shows full reeding, suggesting that this has not been clipped. Is it possibly a circulating counterfeit?

Need for Assay

This circulation of gold coinage eventually brought about a need to check the actual value of gold or silver contained in the various coins. As different coinages had differing standards, it was difficult to regulate the actual exchange of these coinages, for other money or for goods, unless it was known exactly what each represented. To further confuse matters, the various colonies all had their own comparative value of various circulating money and local currencies. Tables were published that provided the relative value in pence of the various coinages in each of the colonies. In Monies of the American Colonies and Confederation, Philip Mossman (p. 257), reproduced a table that originally appeared in The Connecticut Journal for July 22, 1789, showing the relative rates of foreign coins that were (PCGS# 801)

1793 1/2 C XF40 Brown PCGS. C-4, B-4, Low R.3. This is the first year of issue for the half cent denomination, and it is a one-year design type with the profile of Liberty facing to the left. Beginning the next year, the profile is facing to the right. Although it is not known with certainty, it is believed that the designer of this type was Joseph Wright who is best known for his 1793 Liberty Cap large cent design. These half cents were coined from mid-July through mid-September, at about the same time as the Liberty Cap cents were produced. This wonderful example has glossy and smooth surfaces with splendid reddish-brown color and only light wear on the highest points. A few tiny field marks are noted, but the overall quality is choice with excellent eye appeal. (PCGS# 1000)

1793 1/2 C Straight Cap, Thin Leaves MS64 Brown PCGS. B-4, C-4, Die State III, R.3. The B-4 is the most frequently encountered of the four 1793 Half Cent varieties. It is distinguished by the relatively straight cap of Liberty, short 7 in the date, and the longest stems on the lower reverse. Most of the mintage of 3,400 pieces delivered on September 18 are thought to be from this die state. It was believed by Walter Breen that many of this variety were saved as souvenirs, as the first year of issue, and the first design of the denomination. The Condition Census would seem to bear this out as there are a number of high grade examples known.

This is a particularly well defined coin that shows finely detailed hair on Liberty. The leaves on the reverse are not all completely brought up, but several display full venation. The surfaces are unusually bright and glossy with only the slightest area of planchet flaking evident on the right side of the reverse. A very shallow scratch is seen from the center of the obverse to the right rim near 3 o'clock. The diagnostic rust marks are evident in the left obverse field, but these of course have no effect on the coin's grade as all B-4 coins exhibit these to one degree or another. One of the finest 1793 Half Cents certified by any third-party service. (PCGS# 91002)

1842 1/2 C Restrike PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. B-2, Low R.7. Series III. The doubled T in CENT characterizes this variety, which Breen (1983) described as a First Restrike. Although we cannot weigh this coin because of the PCGS slab, the tiny die lump (as produced) at the outside point of star 4 identifies this coin as a Series III striking. A needle-sharp specimen that reveals rose, orange, and aqua hues when rotated under a light. A curly lintmark (as made) northeast of the F in HALF will identify this attractive example. NGC and PCGS combined have certified only 10 restrike 1842 Half Cents, some of which may be the Second Restrike (Breen-3) variety. (PCGS# 1264)

1793 Chain 1C AMERI. VF20 PCGS. S-1, R.4. Apparently, the engraver laid out AMERICA last, and realized that the legend would appear unbalanced unless the nation's name was abbreviated. A splendidly detailed piece with slightly grainy, chocolate-brown surfaces and imposing eye appeal. Both sides are well centered an void of most of the normally seen, post-striking injuries so common to this issue. As future identifiers, a couple of crisscrossing marks are seen under close examination at the center of the reverse within the chain. An attractive example of this coveted rarity, the first Large Cent variety issued and the only die marriage with the AMERI. reverse.

1793 Chain 1C AMERICA, Periods XF45 NGC. S.4, High R.3. Further confirmation of Voigt as the engraver of the Chain cent dies was provided by Thomas Jefferson in a report to the Senate dated December 30, 1793. His report discussed the difficulty of finding qualified men to fill the posts of assayer and chief coiner, with these positions requiring a $10,000 security, which neither Albion Cox or Henry Voigt could provide. Therefore, only copper coinage could be produced in 1793. Jefferson noted: "The duties of this last office [chief coiner] have consequently been, hitherto, performed, and well performed, by Henry Voight, an artist of the United States, but the law requiring these officers to give a security, in the sum of 10,000 dollars each, neither is able to do it. The coinage of the precious metals has, therefore, been prevented, for sometime past, though, in order that the mint might not be entirely idle, the coinage of copper has been going on; the trust in that, at any one point of time, being of but small amount."

Several years ago, Walter Breen suggested that the obverse die for this Sheldon-4 variety may have been engraved by someone other than Voigt. His reasoning was that the minute hair details were much differently treated than on the earlier dies. He speculated that this obverse may have been a sample die by Joseph Wright; however, there is no indication of payment to Wright for any such work. Harry Salyards indicated that this die may have been engraved by the same artist who prepared the Wreath cent dies, as there are stylistic similarities. The actual diesinker of the Wreath cents is not currently known, although it may have been Adam Eckfeldt or perhaps Henry Voigt with assistance from Adam Eckfeldt.

The obverse has excellent medium brown surfaces with a light woodgrain pattern, while the reverse has darker steel and tan color. This is the popular Periods variety with small periods immediately following LIBERTY and the date, although on this example the (PCGS# 1341)

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars-- XF40 NGC. S-8, R.3. Toned dark brown in color and fairly well struck for this important type coin. The lower obverse shows some planchet roughness near the date, and other areas show minor porosity. There is a nick in the hair curls well behind Liberty's ear, and a couple of digs on her neck and forehead. The reverse is a bit cleaner, but does have a few nicks hidden on the wreath, and one in particular on the numerator of the fraction. Always in strong demand by collectors and a coin which is seldom found in anything like perfect condition. (PCGS# 1347)

1796 1C Liberty Cap--Double Struck in Collar--AU58 PCGS. S-83, R.4. Well blended tan and medium brown colors dominate the outward appearance of this important early U.S. Mint error. Both sides are double struck with multiple features most readily evident on the obverse over Liberty's portrait and on the reverse around the lower wreath. Close inspection will reveal two dates, although the first impression is faint. Isolated swirls of charcoal (obverse, date area) and crimson (reverse, mostly confined to the periphery) verdigris are noted for accuracy. (PCGS# 1401)

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797 MS61 Brown PCGS. S-119, R.2. Dr. Sheldon discussed the Nichols Find at length in Penny Whimsy: "Some time before 1863 there was dispersed a quantity of Mint State 1796 and 1797 cents, probably numbering as many as a thousand in all, which are traced to a bag brought in December 1797 from the Mint to his daughters by one Benjamin Goodhue, formerly of the Continental Congress. The name of Nichols Find was attached to these coins in the eighteen sixties and apparently arises from the fact that they were the property of the Nichols Family at the time of their dispersal to collectors, perhaps just prior to 1863. According to report, David Nichols of Gallows Hill, near Salem, Mass., passed them out at face value." Earlier, Walter Breen reported on these coins and this hoard in the January 1952 issue of The Numismatist. It is believed that all of these coins were minted in late 1797 and that they represented the first shipment of Boulton planchets from England. Much as expected, this cent has splendid surfaces with slightly reflective fields with gorgeous light tan and olive color. Myriad abrasions are visible in the fields, but these are almost all from the original flan and were produced during the planchet manufacturing process before the coin was struck. A couple additional planchet fissures and imperfections are visible on the obverse, notably including numerous tiny marks on Liberty's face and upper hair details, as well as roughness in the hair behind the neck. The trio of varieties that form the Nichols Find, 1796 S-119, 1797 S-123, and 1797 S-135, provide an ideal opportunity for the type coin aficionado. (PCGS# 1407)

1857 1C PR64 Cameo PCGS. Snow-PR1. According to official Mint records, 485 proofs were struck of this issue. Most were apparently unsold and melted or released into circulation, however, as only a tiny fraction, perhaps fewer than 50 pieces, of the original number survives today as a recognizable proof. This specimen was produced from one of three proof dies known for the 1857 Flying Eagle, being characterized by a die file mark from the left serif of the top of the I in UNITED to the rim, and a die scratch that slants downward in the obverse field just below the eagle's beak. A thin veil of milky patina rests over both sides, leaving the viewer to angle the coin in order to appreciate the underlying reflective qualities. The obverse displays a few scattered carbon spots and tinges of forest-green color are seen about the wreath on the reverse. Population: 4 in 64 Cameo, 2 finer (11/04). (PCGS# 82040)
