1936-D 50C Columbia MS68 PCGS. This issue was produced at the three U.S. Mints, mostly in September 1936. The Philadelphia Mint produced 9,000 specimens; Denver and San Francisco struck 8,000 each. Single coins were sold at $2.15 each, and at $6.45 per set of three. Most of the survivors are in the lower ranges of Mint State, such as MS60 to MS63. The population figures below indicate that examples in the highest Mint State grades are very difficult. The present MS68 piece displays a narrow ring of russet toning around the peripheries, and a veneer of faint pale-blue and violet color in the centers. Boldly impressed and fully lustrous, with lovingly preserved surfaces. Population: 12 in 68, 0 finer (1/05).

1892 50C Columbian MS67 PCGS. As the first commemorative half dollar struck, the Columbian holds a special place in the long and historic commemorative series. From the first proof striking that sold for $10,000 in 1892, to the final 1893 business strike, Columbian halves were popularly collected at the time and in the hundred years since. This is a spectacularly toned piece whose central regions are shaded in electric-green and rose-gray colors, gradually giving way to a ring of vivid mint-green and golden-orange iridescence at the rims. 1924 50C Huguenot MS67 PCGS. This Huguenot commemorative is awash in luster, and displays wisps of faint olive-gold patina. The design elements are sharply struck, with even the rope ladders to the crow's nests revealing intricate detail. Close examination exhibits no marks of any significance on the pristine surfaces. The bulk of surviving Huguenot halves resides in the MS60 to MS64 grade level. Gem and higher specimens become considerably more difficult to obtain, and pieces above MS67 are virtually nonexistent. 1921 50C Missouri 2x4 MS66 PCGS. Only 5,000 pieces were produced of the 2x4 Missouri Centennial half, making it an instant collectible among numismatists of the day. It is interesting to read the evolution of the design. Robert Aitken was the successful designer, but his earlier motif featured a sketch of the state seal for the reverse rather than the frontiersman and Indian as adopted later. In a classic case of miscommunication in government circles, the Missouri Centennial Commission was not notified of the design change and after several months of advertising continued to feature the rejected state seal reverse for the coin. As all collectors know, the Missouri half is scarce and valuable in all grades with Gem and better pieces rarely available. Only 13 such pieces have been certified by PCGS and five by NGC, with none finer (1/05). The surfaces are smooth and lustrous with only the tiniest marks apparent with a magnifier. The coin displays original shadings of golden-olive with deeper accents of russet around the margins. Exceptionally lustrous as well.

1921 50C Pilgrim MS67 PCGS. Three hundred years after the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the event was commemorated by a United States half dollar issue. A second variety was issued the next year with the addition of the 1921 date in the left obverse field. Mintages totaled 172,000 coins, with just 20,000 of those dated 1921. This is a rare issue and in Gem quality is considered one of the keys to a complete commemorative collection. PCGS has never certified an example graded finer than MS67. This Superb Gem has satiny silver luster with lovely ivory color accented by light gold along the border. The surfaces are exceptional with only a few tiny abrasions seen with a glass. This is an extremely important opportunity for the connoisseur of rare and beautiful commemorative coinage.

1936-D 50C Texas MS68 PCGS. The 1936-D Texas has a reputation as perhaps the best produced issue in the five-year run of this popular silver commemorative. All the qualities that it normally possesses, including a strong strike and radiant, satiny luster, help catapult this Superb example beyond what is normally found on the widely collected Texas Centennial Half Dollar. 1865 3CN MS67 PCGS. Delicate chestnut and cream-gray colors grace this shimmering and magnificently preserved Superb Gem. A boldly struck piece, the A in STATES and the pillars of the denomination are not completely brought up, but nonetheless have excellent definition for a commercial strike. The Three Cent Nickel was introduced in 1865, and was important to commerce during its initial years since silver coins were hoarded, driven from circulation by paper money without specie backing. Although more than 11 million pieces were struck, and Uncirculated pieces are not rare, most have indifferent strikes or are abraded from improper storage. Virtually immaculate examples, such as the present piece, are of the highest rarity. Population: 2 in 67, none finer (1/05).

1871 3CN MS67 PCGS. This is the only PCGS certified 1871 three cent nickel in MS67, and it is only rivaled by an NGC coin of the same grade. This is the second time we have handled this coin and we are equally as impressed this time as we were when we saw it previously. The surfaces are untoned, brilliant, and nearly flawless. The striking details are razor sharp with complete definition on the Roman Numeral III on the reverse. An exceptional business strike of this heavily circulated coin, of which only 604,000 pieces were produced.

1873 3CN Closed 3 MS66 PCGS. Unlike the 1873 logotypes on the Cent and Double Eagle, one can use the naked eye to distinguish between the Open 3 and Closed 3 subtypes of the Three Cent Nickel. The Closed 3 is similar to an 8 when viewed without magnification, hence the complaint by the Chief Coiner on January 18 to led to a change of the logotype. Since the modification was early in the year, the Closed 3 is the scarcer subtype for business strikes. This sharply struck piece has battleship-gray color and vibrant cartwheel luster. The surfaces are unabraded, although faint clash marks (as produced) are noted on each side. Population: 7 in 66, none finer (1/05).

1873 3CN Open 3 MS65 PCGS. A lustrous Gem with lightly variegated tan and dove-gray patina. The obverse is well struck, even on the denticles, while the reverse shows occasional softness of strike, typical for a business strike within the series. The obverse exhibits multiple prominent mint-produced clashmarks, the reverse die was apparently new since no clashes are present. No proof Open 3 Three Cent Nickels were struck, since the logotype modified too late for specimen production. Population: 8 in 65, none finer (1/05).

1874 3CN MS67 PCGS. When one considers the constant die stress in producing nickel coinage, particularly in these early years, and the ongoing menace of carbon spotting, it is little wonder that Gem and better examples from high production years are deceivingly difficult to locate. The present Superb Gem shimmers with satiny brilliance and is boldly struck with almost no evidence of die clashing. Just the slightest rose-gold patina embraces either side. We cannot recall seeing another 1874 of this caliber and the grading services concur, this being the only MS67 certified by either PCGS or NGC (1/05).

1875 3CN MS67 PCGS. A lustrous and intricately struck example, virtually as struck aside from light chestnut color. Struck from strongly clashed dies, Liberty's inverted profile is completely outlined on the left reverse field. 1875 is the first date in the series to have a production below 250,000 pieces, silver coins had returned to circulation by this time. As of (1/05), the present Superb Gem is the single highest PCGS certified 1875 Three Cent Nickel. Surprisingly, among proof strikings, no 1875 pieces have reached the PR67 level.

1876 3CN MS65 PCGS. The 1876 Three Cent nickel piece is a difficult coin at the MS65 grade level. Combined PCGS and NGC population figures show just 36 examples certified as MS65, with only nine graded higher (1/05). The specimen we offer here displays a thin veneer of champagne color over fully lustrous surfaces that are well preserved. There are no significant contact marks or unsightly spots. The design elements are generally well struck, though the lines in the middle of the first upright of the III are weak. A small toning spot beneath Liberty's ear serves as a pedigree marker. 1883 3CN MS67 PCGS. Pastel apricot and powder-blue hues enrich this delightful razor-sharp example. The cartwheel luster is pronounced. Except for a brief resurgence of the denomination in 1881, business strike production of Three Cent Nickels was reduced to token numbers after 1876. The 1883 continues the trend of declining mintages, since just 4,000 commercial strikes were coined, fewer than the 6,609 proofs struck for collectors of the day. Not surprisingly, the 1883 is rare in all Mint State grades. As of (1/05), just 21 pieces are certified by PCGS in Uncirculated condition, and only one piece, the present Superb Gem, achieves the MS67 level.
