1984 1C Doubled Die Obverse MS67 Red PCGS. FS-037. Lincoln's ear is widely die doubled, and he has a double chin as well. Blended orange and rose colors grace this lustrous and meticulously struck Superb Gem. Distributed tiny trapped gas bubbles are always present on authentic Uncirculated pieces.

1793 1/2 C Fine 15 PCGS. B-4, C-4, Low R.3. Apparently a previously unreported late die state, a shallow retained cud appears along the reverse border between 6:30 and 8:30. Numismatic researcher Ronald Manley has examined photos of this piece and assigned a new die state number, Manley State 3.0. As the coin is within a PCGS holder, it is not 100% certain that this is actually a new die state, for it could be a planchet lamination, however, the evidence weights heavily toward the retained cud description. Location of a second example, or an intermediate state with a die crack in this same area would be required to be absolutely certain.

Maroon fields complement the steel-brown devices. The strike is even with all legends and berries sharp, and the trailing neck curls have pleasing definition. A few wispy obverse marks include a pinprick on the neck. As the Cohen-4 variety is believed to be the last 1793 half cent struck, and this example is the latest known die state, it could be argued that this example is the very last 1793 half cent ever struck! The fields are minutely granular, and HALF CENT is weak, but the remaining legends are crisp, and the types are strong. The first Half Cent variety struck by the fledgling Philadelphia Mint. Encapsulated in a green label holder.

1795 1/2 C Plain Edge--Double Struck--VF Details, Improperly Cleaned, NCS. C-6a, B-6a, R.2. No Pole. A very attractive coin which shows strong doubling on Liberty's bust, the dentils and also on her cap, the reverse is fully doubled, with evidence on the wreath, lettering and dentils. Toned a medium brown with a glazed shadow of blue, which apparently kept this one from a regular holder. The surfaces are generally pleasing for the grade, with minor nicks and contacts present in the fields, with Liberty's face and neck smoother than the surrounding fields. These early half cents were struck under fairly extreme conditions, and no doubt received the least respect of any denomination produced. A number of half cents were coined from cut down large cents, or tokens or whatever other copper stuff was available to make them. Such double strikings are sometimes available, but always very popular with collectors who prize such pieces for their untold story of the early days in the Philadelphia Mint. (PCGS# 1018)

1795 1/2 C Plain Edge AU50 PCGS. B-6a, B-6c, C-6a, R.2. The more available Thin Planchet subvariety is presumed. A splendidly detailed example of this conditionally elusive early type. Evenly and sharply struck, the Talbot, Allum, & Lee Cent undertype is only visible near 1 o'clock on the reverse, where some of the ship's rigging is apparent. Several light obverse handling marks are not readily detected due to subsequent natural golden-brown toning. (PCGS# 1018)

A trace of carbon above the first 0 in the date and a small tick on the bust truncation are appropriate for the grade. Encapsulated in a green label PCGS holder. Population: 2 in 63, 3 finer (8/05). The underdigit 0 is clear, and fully outlines the 2 in the date. As a date, the rarest within the Draped Bust type.

A popular variety, not only due to its unusual 'Spiked Chin' bust, but because the reverse exhibits a prominent multi-staged die break along the border. On the present piece, the break is bounded between IT in UNITED and the left side of the first A in AMERICA. A crisply struck mahogany example with glimpses of lighter tan color on the lower obverse. Moderate marks are noted on the forehead and above the A in HALF. (PCGS# 1075)
