The underdigit is plainly visible to the right of the 7, and the die defect at the upper right of A3 on the reverse is only faintly visible, indicating an early die state. Sharply defined with a little bit of mint luster remaining and rich, multicolored toning over both sides. Marred by graffiti scratches in the obverse and reverse fields, but these are somewhat hidden by the lovely swirl of deep patina on both sides of the piece.

By far the scarcest of the three 1827/6 die pairings, this example shows the bases of 8 and 7 joined to the rim, unlike either of the other two varieties. Rather bright with minor hairlines on each side, this piece exhibits pleasing silver-gray color in the centers, and apricot-gold toning near the borders. 1827 50C Square Base 2 AU53 NGC. O-108, Low R.4. A small die dot rests just above the inner point of obverse Star 1. A cluster of tiny die lumps is seen in the left reverse field, midway between the outer edge of the eagle's left (facing) wing and the bottom of T in UNITED. Lovely golden-brown, sea-green, and electric-blue toning adorns the still-lustrous surfaces, which only have a few unimportant marks on each side. This is simply a highly attractive example, regardless of the grade.

1827 50C Square Base 2 XF45 NGC. O-108, Low R.4. Overton says the "Dotted Star" variety was deliberately done, perhaps when the reverse die was changed. This is an intermediate die state that still plainly shows the die dot on the obverse, but lapping has eliminated the die lumps below the I in UNITED on the reverse. Even wear over the highpoints but some unevenness of strike is apparent as evidenced by softness on several of the stars and the eagle's left (facing) wing. Gray-rose toning covers each side. This piece is also an early die state that shows several small raised die defect ridges and lumps on Liberty's neck below the ear. Cleaned long ago, the surfaces have since toned over in the fields with bright accents over the highpoints of the design. An excellent opportunity for the Bust half collector.

1827 50C Square Base 2 AU58 NGC. O-110, Low R.4. The point of star 7 touches segment, and the first three vertical shield stripes are incomplete (as made) near their bases. Light golden-gray surfaces are imbued with traces of lavender and sky-blue, and considerable luster is retained in the recessed areas. The design elements are well defined, though minor softness is seen in some of Liberty's hair curls. A few minute marks on Liberty's cheek do not distract.

1827 50C Square Base 2 AU53 NGC. O-111, R.4. Dusky rose toning dominates this unusual but appealing coin, in which the worn highpoint areas are light blue. The attribution of this scarce variety is confirmed both by Overton, who says, "Line one of stripes one, two, and three [extends] to crossbar two," and by Peterson (The Ultimate Guide To Attributing Bust Half Dollars), who says, "Gule three has an extension of the first and third pale beneath the base of the shield with an open area appearing like a key hole." The strike is generous, from moderately eroded dies. An area of dark toning or carbon is noted with a glass between STATES and OF, but it fails to diminish the beauty of this lovely specimen.

1827 50C Square Base 2 AU53 NGC. O-112, R.3. This lovely coin is well struck, but examination with a glass reveals a few light scrapes on Liberty's cheek. There are few other distractions, however, and the lustrous, untoned state appears much the same as it did when it dropped from the dies 178 years ago. All the diagnostics of O-112, which shares a reverse with O-113 and O-149, are present. A straight tool mark extends from the apex of the shield (Peterson correctly points out that it is from both sides, not just to the right as Overton says), the first S in STATES is recut, and the left edge of I is beneath the right-side upright of T. Distinguishing this variety from those others are the absence of wavy lines below the bust, as on O-149, and the lack of erupting dentils and wavy lines beneath the cap, as on O-113.
