1945-P 5C Doubled Die Reverse MS66 NGC. FS-030. Bold doubling is noted on some of the letters in MONTICELLO and CENTS. The surfaces show satiny luster that for a large part remain uninterrupted. This variety is seldom seen in such a high grade and for that reason, Jefferson specialists will no doubt be getting in line to bid when this piece hits the floor. Census: 6 in 66, 0 finer (12/05). 1954-S/D 5C MS66 NGC. FS-033. Struck from an early state of the dies, the D shows plainly beneath the S with little or no magnification. Bernard Nagengast reports this variety does not seem to exist as a full strike, and few even have partial steps. Such is the case with this example, as the strike is quite flat at the center of the reverse. The golden tinted surfaces show only a few scattered, small contact marks. Presently, this is the single finest example certified by NGC (12/05). (PCGS# 4055)

1829 H10C MS64 NGC. V-13, LM-4, R.3. This is a lovely example with brilliant ivory surfaces accented by faint heather and iridescent toning. The underlying fields are essentially prooflike with full satiny luster. The devices are well struck, and the preservation is exemplary for the grade. Struck from essentially perfect dies with only faint clash marks visible in the reverse field. (PCGS# 4276)

1851-O 3CS MS65 Prooflike NGC. This coin is the only example of this popular branch mint issue to earn the Prooflike designation from NGC. This specimen features silver-white, brilliantly polished surfaces that provide a high degree of contrast against the frosty devices. Well struck, with most star centrils full, and essentially mark-free. A tiny scrape near the shield, revealed only under magnification, perhaps limits an even higher grade. (PCGS# 3665)

1852 3CS MS65 PCGS. A splendid Type One coin that has thick mint frost over each side, and covered in light gray, gold, mauve, and violet coloration. As typical of the issue, the strike is not uniform. The obverse periphery is relatively strong, but the central shield is weak. On the reverse, some of the star centers are well brought up, while others are weak. The surfaces are well preserved throughout. PCGS has certified 76 pieces finer (12/05). (PCGS# 3666)

1869 3CS MS66 NGC. A rare, low mintage date with only 4,500 business strikes produced. Virtually the entire run of business strikes from 1863 to 1872 was melted in 1873 and few Uncirculated pieces survived. Only 8 pieces have been so graded by NGC (12/05) with just 2 finer. This is a sharply stuck coin that shows no die clashing. A rich overlay of electric-blue, antique-gold, and rose-magenta toning is splashed over both sides. Just a couple of tiny abrasions are reported at the lower portion of the obverse. (PCGS# 3689)

The introduction of Fractional Currency and the Shield Nickel sealed the fate of the Three Cent Silver, which had very low mintages after 1862. For the 1870, a scant 3,000 pieces were struck.
