1875-CC 20C MS64 PCGS. Only 133,290 pieces were struck of the 1875-CC Twenty Cent Piece. While technically 1876-CC coins were produced, it is effectively a non-collectible issue, making the 1875-CC the only readily obtainable coin of the denomination from the Carson City facility. This is a bright, satiny representative with noticeable striking deficiency on the eagle's left (facing) wingtip. Population: 99 in 64, 22 finer (12/05). (PCGS# 5297)

1875-CC 20C MS65 NGC. Both sides of this minimally patinated Gem are draped in coruscant mint frost. A few flickers of pale gold iridescence are seen near the rims, the obverse impression is razor sharp in all areas. As the only readily obtainable CC-mint issue in the Twenty Cent series, the 1875-CC is an obviously important coin. Only 133,290 pieces were produced, and examples above the MS60 grade level are rightly considered to be rare. Census: 31 in 65, 5 finer (11/05). (PCGS# 5297)

1876 20C MS62 NGC. Mint Engraver William Barber copied the design for the reverse of the twenty-cent piece from the Trade dollar, introduced in 1873. This specimen has lustrous silver-gray surfaces, light field hairlines, and is rather softly struck on some of the obverse highpoints, but it is nonetheless an appealing example of this scarcer date. With a mintage of only 14,640 pieces, the 1876 had an original production run only 1/78th that of the more common 1875-S. (PCGS# 5299)

1875 20C PR64 Cameo PCGS. This first-year proof is usually thought of as a type coin. However, 590 proofs were still on hand at the close of the year, so these pieces were undoubtedly melted, further reducing the original mintage of 2,790 pieces. The surfaces of this coin are mostly brilliant. The fields are deeply reflective with a significant overlay of mint frost over the devices. A curious series of semi-circular raised lines are seen at the top of the obverse. These appear to have been polished into the die, but their purpose is unknown. Population: 10 in 64, 6 finer (12/05). (PCGS# 85303)

1878 20C PR62 NGC. The low mintage 1878 is a key issue in the short-lived twenty cent series and one that is pursued by collectors in all grades. While the official mintage of the 1878 Twenty Cent piece was 760 pieces (all proofs), only 600 coins were actually sold, and far fewer are actually extant today in PR60 and better grades. The obverse of this piece is deeply toned in cobalt-blue and maybe-gray, while the reverse is mostly light cobalt-blue and lavender. The design elements are exquisitely struck, and the surfaces appear to be devoid of mentionable contact marks. Some wispy hairlines are noted in the fields. (PCGS# 5306)

1804 25C --Cleaned, Scratched--ANACS. VG8 Details. B-2, R.6. Initial year of the Draped Bust type, and one of just 6,738 pieces produced. Browning 2, which can be recognized by a higher placement of the 4 in the date, is by far the scarcer of two die pairings for the year. The present example is light gray in color with a shallow scratch above the hair ribbon and a pair of digs near the rim at 10 o'clock. Several wispy slide marks are also noticed on the portrait and only a bit of irregular wear precludes what would other be Fine details. An elusive variety for the advanced collector of Draped Bust Quarters. (PCGS# 5312)

1804 25C Fine 12 PCGS. B-1, R.4. Similar in mintage to the 1796, the 1804 is more affordable since it does not represent a one-year type. However, the scant production of 6,738 pieces ensures that the quantity of survivors is insufficient to meet demand. Light gray toning bathes each side, and the design elements are nicely defined for the grade. A short, shallow toned-over scrape in the lower right reverse quadrant is mentioned for accuracy. 1805 25C Fine 12 PCGS. B-4, R.4. This scarce variety has the 5 in the date clear of bust, while the C in the denomination is merged with the tail feathers. Mint personnel later took the obverse, which was apparently in sufficiently good shape, to overdate with a 6 to create the 1806/5 overdate. This example has lustrous silver-gray areas on both sides alternating with smoky blue-gray patches. This specimen is pleasingly well struck and well centered, with grade-consistent detail and no major distractions. PLURIBUS UNUM is visible, and most of the dentilation remains. The shield lines are bold, with about half of the eagle feathers visible. A pleasing example. (PCGS# 5313)

The fields are silver-gray with steel-blue and copper clinging to some of the devices. Examination with a glass reveals only a few light ticks and field chatter. 1805 25C MS62 PCGS. B-3, R.1. A common variety that is easily attributed by the bottom right serif of the I in LIBERTY missing on the obverse and an engraver's scratch on the reverse that connects the stem to the right tip of the C. The surfaces are essentially brilliant with a hint of pale golden-tan toning present on each side. The satiny surfaces exhibit numerous die cracks and noticeable clashing, the result of the obverse and reverse dies coming together without a coin blank between them. Very few Uncirculated examples of this second year Heraldic Eagle issue are extant. Population: 2 in 62, 17 finer (12/05). (PCGS# 5313)

While not a scarce variety, this is one of the later die states seen, which always delights variety specialists.
