1921 $1 Zerbe PR65 PCGS. An interesting proof representation from this important transitional year in silver dollar coinage. The Philadelphia Mint allegedly produced these coins for Farran Zerbe as mates for his 1921-S proofs, and as consolation for their failure to place the high relief Peace dollars into circulation during the 1921 calendar year. While not of the same quality as the Chapman proofs, also dated 1921, those struck for Farran Zerbe are much more available, some estimate as many as 200 may have been produced. This modestly reflective specimen is rather deeply toned in mottled reddish-orange, violet, and steel-blue shades. Several unobtrusive facial marks are well concealed by the toning. 1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves VF25 PCGS. B-5, BB-27, R.1. The thin raised line or 'bar' behind the highest neck curl is a mint-made diagnostic for the familiar Bolender-5 variety. Semi-bright silver-gray surfaces display occasional touches of cobalt-blue and lavender toning, especially around the peripheral areas. The design elements show nice detail, and are well centered on the planchet, and the dentilation is strong on both sides. A few wispy slide marks are noted, particularly on the obverse. Light adjustment marks are visible at the upper reverse border. (PCGS# 6852)

Bolender-5 is the most recognizable variety to Flowing Hair dollar collectors, since many have learned to look for a mint defect 'bar' behind the highest trailing curl. Impressively defined for the grade, this deeply toned piece displays mauve, tan, and aqua-blue colors. Some adjustment marks near the date and behind the ear were present when the coin was first struck. Inconspicuous marks are noted on the leaves beneath the left (facing) wing, and a short scratch is found above the bust tip. (PCGS# 6852)

1795 $1 Draped Bust, Off Center AU55 PCGS. B-14, BB-51, R.1. A deeply toned early Bust dollar that exhibits radiant blue-gray and antique-golden colors. The obverse rim has a minor metal chip above star 7 that probably occurred at the time of striking. Close examination reveals an ancient scratch laterally from Liberty's neck to star 13. Most of the eagle's breast feathers are present, and the intricate details of the wreath and hair curls are bold. Not rare as a variety, but one of only two Draped Bust die marriages for the year. The majority of survivors are in VF and XF grades and often impaired. Borderline Uncirculated pieces are very scarce and desirable. Housed in a first generation PCGS holder. As a date, the 1796 is significantly scarcer than the 1795, yet the latter tends to trade at higher values. (PCGS# 6860)

A couple of tiny rim dings are also noted. Although BB-65 is the only Large Date variety among 1796 dollars, it is equally famous for the large die break between the IC in AMERICA.

1797 $1 10x6 Stars AU58 NGC. Double Struck, although not stated on the holder. B-3, BB-71, R.1. The obverse and reverse are both double struck with approximately a five degree rotation between strikes. However, this feature is not prominent and is best seen with a strong loupe. Apparently the second strike virtually obliterated the initial strike. Examination will discover the 9 from the initial strike touching the second 7, and Liberty's face shows dramatic doubling on her forehead, nose and chin. On the reverse, the right wing of the eagle shows the most doubling with the outline of the initial strike found below the wing feather tips. Doubled on the reverse dentils, but the obverse dentils show minimal evidence of doubling.

A lovely coin for the grade, with deep gray toning over the surfaces with a touch of blue and green mixed into Liberty's curls and the surrounding fields nearby. An early die state for the collector. The eagle's breast feathers show substantial definition although the highest ones are worn by brief circulation. At least five other double struck examples are known of 1797 silver dollars, curiously each of the three varieties are known to show similar double striking. Early Philadelphia Mint errors are rare and seldom offered, and while this is not the most dramatic double struck Bust dollar, it is certainly in high grade and very attractive. (PCGS# 6865)

The obverse rim has a nick at 9:30, and the slightly rotated reverse has a small rim bruise at 12 o'clock. Only the faintest gold toning is visible on either side. An intermediate state of the dies with evidence of minor die lapping and light cracks, although most of the late state die cracks have not formed. (PCGS# 6863)

This is an example of one of Bowers' Blundered Stars reverses, here combined with an obverse die that was only used to strike this one variety. A severe whizzing has left the surfaces overly shiny and unnatural-looking, with slight mellowing beginning on the central devices. Unfortunately, the "improvement" has actually made the numerous small abrasions and contusions, particularly noted on the obverse, more prominent than they would be otherwise, as they tend to stand out against the shiny background. 1798 $1 Large Eagle AU53 NGC. B-23, BB-105, R.3. A well struck coin that has traces of luster in the fields. The toning ranges from silver-gray to darker speckled gray around the rims. Examination of the surfaces will find some faint hairlines in the fields, but no adjustment marks or rim bumps disturb the viewer. Early die state struck before the obverse was lapped, where the second curl from the bottom was greatly thinned by that process. A common variety, but in very high grade for the die pairing. 1798 $1 Large Eagle, 5 Stripes, 10 Arrows VF35 ANACS. B-17, BB-101, R.5. The reverse die seen here was first used to strike BB-96 Dollars, then it was reground, removing two of the "sticks" in the bundle of arrows, and the die was then used to strike the short-lived and scarce B-17, BB-101 variety. Bowers estimates that only 70-120 pieces are believed known in all grades and most are well circulated. Problem-free and evenly worn, the surfaces show slate-gray color, with dappled olive and lilac accents prominent throughout. Nicely defined and free of noteworthy distractions, this is a highly desirable coin for circulated type purposes. (PCGS# 6874)

1798 $1 Large Eagle, 10 Arrows--Cleaned--ANACS. XF45 Details. B-13, BB-108, R.3. This variety is characterized by small die flaws that are located between star 13 and the bust. There is also a prominent die crack that extends upward from the lower right serif of the L in LIBERTY. Light gray surfaces turn to golden-russet around the margins. A number of heavy, crisscrossing adjustment marks are seen near the center of the reverse. Still, an attractive example that was one lightly cleaned. (PCGS# 6876)
