1923-S 50C MS64 NGC. Flashy and brilliant with wispy die striations in the fields that only serve to increase the brightness of the coin. Well struck with a few minor field grazes that preclude a higher grade. Somewhat softly, if typically struck, on the obverse highpoints. Only 2.1 million pieces were struck of the 1923-S half dollar. The vast majority entered circulation, and Mint State examples are quite elusive. Census: 71 in 64, 35 finer (8/06).

This simple undated pattern features the legends CENT/ONE TENTH SILVER on the obverse, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and a small wreath decorate the reverse. Struck in nickel with a reeded edge. These restrikes are similar to standard coin nickel. Fewer than a half dozen pieces are known. This is a bright, problem-free example that shows a few accents of light lilac-golden color. 1853 E1C One Cent, Judd-149, Pollock-178, High R.6, PR65 PCGS. A regular issue Liberty quarter eagle obverse die is paired with a simple die that bears a wreath and the widely separated denomination ONE/CENT. An early attempt to replace the cumbersome large cent with a smaller diameter piece in different alloy. Judd-149 has a reeded edge, and is struck in a white metal alloy of 40% nickel, 40% copper, and 20% zinc. Judd-150 and Judd-151 were struck from the same dies, but with different proportions of the same three metals. This meticulously struck and smooth Gem is nearly untoned, and is flawless save for a hint of a lamination in an obverse line between 4 and 10 o'clock. (PCGS# 11622)

1858 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-191, Pollock-233-234, R.5, PR64 PCGS. A transitional pattern that combines the regular dies of the Small Letters obverse of 1858 with 1859's Laurel Wreath reverse. The leaves on the reverse are arranged in clusters of five. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. Sharply struck throughout with lustrous surfaces that show light tan-golden color overall with just a tinge of underlying pink.

1858 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-203, Pollock-247, R.5, PR65 Cameo NGC. The obverse has a hook-necked eagle flying left with tall wings. The reverse has the denomination within an oak wreath with an olive sprig and a group of three arrows are wrapped into the bottom of the wreath. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. An interesting sidebar to this pattern is that counterfeits have been produced of it. They are discussed by Paul Gilkes in a Coin World article in January 13, 1992. The original whitish surfaces have taken on a light accent of red over the years. Sharply defined throughout with a pleasing, contrasted appearance. (PCGS# 11869)

1870 25C Standard Silver Quarter Dollar, Judd-888, Pollock-987, R.5, PR62 PCGS. Liberty faces right and wears a cap ornamented with three stars. The reverse is dominated by a wreath of cotton and corn. Unlike the similar Judd-906, the date is within the wreath instead of beneath it. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Light golden-brown, aqua, and mauve toning enriches the borders of this flashy and assertively struck specimen. The surfaces are pleasing for the grade. Population: 10 in 62, 17 finer (8/06). 1794 50C Fine 15 PCGS. O-101, R.4. Blended dusky dove-gray and apple-green patina embraces this pleasing representative. Liberty's hair tresses are partly evident, and the wings and tail feathers display ample inner detail. Both sides are much more clean than expected, and only a short mark beneath the E in STATES will serve to identify the piece. The usually seen radial die crack is present on the reverse at 10 o'clock, but the die crack through the upper wreath to the final S in STATES has not yet developed. Overton-101 is the most available of the 11 known half dollar die marriages for this introductory date of the denomination. The remaining ten varieties range from very scarce to extremely rare. 1794 50C --Damaged--NCS. VF Details O-101, High R.3. The damage referred to on the NCS holder consists of two gouges, one running from near Liberty's chin through star 11 to the edge, and the other obliterating the left side of the 4. There is also what may be a trace of graffiti below the eagle's beak. Otherwise, the surfaces are very much in line with the details grade, and in fact the coin presents an overall appearance that is not unpleasing. This is a chance to pick up a well-detailed example of the date at what might be an affordable price. (PCGS# 6051)

Probably only about 20 examples of this variety still exist today. The obverse has heavy, old crossing scratches in the lower right field, and these are now blended with the rest of the obverse surface. A small streak of darkish lamination is also visible on the obverse. A few faint adjustment marks can be seen on the reverse. Overall, this is an attractive, naturally toned example. (PCGS# 6051)

1794 50C VF35 PCGS. O-101a, R.4. Of the 11 known die varieties of 1794 half dollars, only the Overton-101 variety is relatively easy to obtain, thus it is the variety most often chosen by date and type collectors. The first delivery of 1794 half dollars consisted of 5,300 coins. Conflicting sources record the date as either October 15 (the same date as the first silver dollars), or December 1. An additional quantity of 18,164 pieces were delivered by the chief coiner on February 4, 1795, and these two deliveries represent what is believed to be the entire mintage of half dollars dated 1794. This combined total of 23,464 coins is recorded in the Guide Book and other references as the mintage for this date. Combined rarity ratings suggest that about 540 pieces survive today, although the actual total may be somewhat higher. This is a lovely example with deep gray and steel color, accented by ivory and cobalt-blue on the reverse. A few insignificant abrasions and faint scratches are evident, but consistent with the grade. The die crack recorded for the O-101a die state is faintly visible on this example. Population: 14 in 35, 15 finer (7/06).
